I'm not too used to the rack and pinion steering (that's what I've heard it called at least) steering my AT200 has.. is there any way to 'loosen that up', and make it require a little less effort to turn in? More like power assisted?

You already have power steering. Is it not working or something?

You know my ST doesn't have power steering also. Would like to have that graceful turning affect, but I've got an ST. Instead the turns are rather hard. I first thought that the GT's were like this also when I first had my car.
Hym3n, Sorry I didn't have any useful info that might help you. But just thought I'd add my comment because I know how you feel. I thought that ST's didn't have it? I don't have cruise control so I thought that's why I didn't have the power steering option also. This post has been edited by CelicaQT: Sep 9, 2003 - 7:53 AM |

It may BE power steering, as far as going back to upright position after a turn goes, but for actually turning the wheel.. it feels like you really have to pull it. Maybe it did initially have power steering and it was disabled or run down somehow. I'll just call a local Toyota dealer.

Just look to see if the rack has 2 hoses going to it, if not, there is no reason you couldnt get the rack, pump, hoses, pulleys and brackets from a salvage yard and change it to power steering.
If it does have the hoses, then something is wrong, like bad pump, missing belt, serious leak etc...My friend bought a VW golf and complained about the steereing for weeks, talked about converting to power steering, when we looked, it already had p/s, was just missing the belt... |
