So, I've had the car for about two months. Everything worked fine up until a month ago; the sunroof suddenly stopped working properly. It opens fine, but when I try to close it again, it stops halfway almost as if it rubs against something. I've checked and there's nothing touching. After a minute or two, it'll go again and I can close it.

I've ruled out the fact that the glass/plastic housing stretches since I've tried in the mornings when the car was cool too. So I've been told it's the motor. First, what do you guys think the problem is, and second, how much would the motor cost too replace?

You do know it auto stops at the halfway point from the factory right? Then you have to release the button and press it again to get it to fully close. Not sure but I think maybe it's so you don't close someone or something in the roof?

Its a safety feature so that people like you don't end up killing themselves or everyone around them.
Slow down Paul Walker.

^ sounds like the auto stop to me.... I think its just a mid setting if you want it 1/2 open or something rather then a safety feature but who knows.

X2 on this! That is what I was told. I think my mom's old Camry did the same thing.

I don't think so, at least it didn't do this at the beginning. Maybe a misunderstanding? I mean that it goes forward (closed) again only halfway, not that when it's fully open and tilted over, that it only goes down (closed) halfway.

If that is the case, however, that would be good. However, it still doesn't wanna go after I let go and press again. Only after a minute does it budge again.

Could it be a short in a wire? Is the problem consistant?

It sounds like maybe there's a bearing going out in the motor, or something needs lubed

Don't know, you guys are the experts...problem is consistent. Thing is, it'll just not work for a minute...after that, it's fine and can close again.

Lubing does sound reasonable, since it seems like it's straining.

Sounds like something is wrong with the auto stop feature. I've owned 3 6GCs and two Camry's that all had this feature. When it goes back it goes all the way till it's fully open. When you close it it stops halfway then you have to release it and press it again to get it to close all the way. Sounds like what yours is doing but yours won't go the last half until a few moments later right?

Exactly, I have to wait about a minute before it'll fully close. Thing is, it never even stopped halfway before I encountered problems, just always closed right away.

I haven't, no.

Just as an update, I messed with it today and just put it on tilt, so barely even stressed the motor. Exact same thing. It'll go up, but not back down, and after a minute it's fine and movable again.

I agree on the halfway point, for me I have to press the switch again to make it close all the way.

sounds to me like somethings going on with the switch........if the open never fails and the close does.....
reminds me of the rear quarter window switches in the convertibles.....doesn't hurt to test the switch....

Hmm, so I just have to rip open that console thing and see? And how do I go about doing that?
