Okay, so my check engine light's been going on and off lately, and recently i (actually it was Ngofcukingway) WE checked the code, and it's saying that the EGR valve is failing. But it dosen't stay on, every 15-20 miles it'll go off for about 2-3 miles. So i don't think it's been a total failure yet, however i should try to do something about it.

First off, This weekend i plan to pull the EGR itself and clean the crap out of it, and hope that works, Otherwise I could use some other opinions/advice.

Also, I have no camera right now or i'd show you what i mean, but i'm missing (assumptionaly) a bung of sorts... Let me try to describe, then hit ya'll with a location.
*5sfe - on the driver side, between the Valve cover, and the Intake Manifold @ the Throttle Body area; there is a hose that runs between. This hose has direct access to control the EGR valve (Or some system component that allows the engine to run properly) NOT the line that some have running to the air intake (or back into the throttle body) no, this line is maybe 3-4 inches long, and is connected to what looks like a sensor of sorts... (sorry i have no camera w/ internet access frown.gif ) Now, this "sensor" is pretty loose and bobbly; so i figure it should be placed in a "Bung" of sorts; and so with out it; It's my belief that the "Sensor" (or maybe it's a thru-tube; IDK - haven't had time to pull it) I believe it may be picking up excess Oxygen and telling my EGR that there is more Oxygen in the engines-air, so there fore it's double burning it. Witch would explain why the EGR is "Failing." It's doing it's job, But bassed on inacurate information; and therefore not doing it's job at all.

Does this make any sense? Or am i WAY fcuking off?

Here is where that "Bung" should be located

I cannot find a part number ANYWHERE for that darn thing... Does anyone know what it is?

Any ideas, opinions, advice, would be greatly appreciated.

I have the exact problem as you. This happen to me on my rav4 before, the usual case of the EGR actually failing is uncommon. The culprit is usually the VSV, usually because of age it collects dirt and gunk and fails. Most people usually just replace the VSV but if i remeber correctly its around 100 bucks or so.
You can just live with it, but if you live in a place with a smog test, or up here called aircare.. your fail for sure.

I tried cleaning it... it didn't help mad.gif

If the VSV was out it would stay on. I had that problem, what did happen was i would reset the ECU and it would stay of for an hour then the light would come back on, id reset it again and another 2 hours would go by and then it would come on again, but if you talking about it flashing on and off then i would not think its the VSV, by the way, its a B!tch to change out too. so hope that im right and thats not it.

VSV - That would be the round (ufo/plate shaped) cannister between the throttle body and fire-wall, closest to the driver side, Yeah?

HAVOC - When you reset the ECU, and it turned off for a bit; Were you able to pass an inspection? Or do i need to 'Work' on it to get a sticker?

and yes, unfortunately, i live in the city-limits and require to pass smog. frown.gif (Plus it's just wasting gas, i should have it fixed sooner or later)

To be honest i didnt try, but regardless if the senser was faulty, the car still didnt run right, it just didnt flip the senser for a short time because it was going out. Come to find out, sensers can wear out, they dont always just stop working. Anyways, Yah, its under the throttle body connected to the Block. I almost couldnt fit my arm in there to work, and i almost didnt have enought room when i was in there to get it off, it sucks a lot to get it off and its worse trying to get it back on.

Judging by the arrow in your picture and description it seems like you're missing the rubber piece in the valve cover that the PCV valve goes into, but I'm not really sure.

On the GT theres a big tube going from the EGR valve thats mounted in the back of the intake manifold to the head (IIRC) and cleaning that tube does help.
On the ST that tube is much smaller and clean it out doesn't always work, but you can easily pull the front cover off the intake manifold and clean the EGR ports inside also.

What size Wrench is that to remove that hose? It's bigger than 22mm and that's the biggest my local oriley had to offer me frown.gif
What size is it so i can crank that damn thing off?

YES! That's the part number i'm trying to come up with. Anyone know?

Not necessarily. You do know you can pass emissions if you have less than three fails on the test. The Check Engine light is an automatic fail but if you reset the ECU it should stay off for a bit like Havok was saying - just do it before you get there.
Make sure you clean all that stuff first tho so the emissions will be as good as they can be for free.

where is that? Our Altima failed inspection due to low-wear on the tires. I took it and had another tire put on it, and viola; it passed. (well, there was a fieasco, but that's a story for another day. laugh.gif )

Only outside of the city limits have i heard of them doing things llike that. But if you have a city address then they wont inspect you either. kindasad.gif

I'm talking about Emissions. They consider that a seperate part of the test. Call and ask someone but I know I had one fail on my OBDII Celica and they passed me. When I asked them why they said you have 3 strikes your out. Maybe thats only OBDII? Call em. I used the Pennzoil place on 529 near Fry. They were really cool over there and were more interested in my mods than the test - maybe they'll like your wing tongue.gif

Hey, that's pretty close. The Fire-Stone folks are still sore over their fcuking tires i guess... cwm13.gif like its my fault they cant design tires rolleyes.gif

Yeah, i think i'll check out a place w/ cool people. I could always throw a few turbo parts in the front seat; and get to chit-chating about it biggrin.gif

But our Altima is OBDII... So i've been told. I dont mess with the Altima. It's my gals car, and i only mess with it when somethings wrong. (Breaks, oil, belts, ect.)

There should be a place to find out what the laws are in your city/state. It's such a hassle to not know.

Anyone know the PN on that seal yet?

To answer you question D

Like death says, you can take our cars apart with a 14 and a 12. This Nut is a 14 if i remember, whats hard is the angle and all the crap in the way. we wouldnt get the ratchet in there so dont bother, also there is so much grease around that area you want to be able to feel that its gripping or you slip and strip it, and you DONT want to do that.
