okay so cold air intake, being the first mod that about every car enthusiast does on their car at first. i know i was one of them.

anyways use the search button in the right hand corner, and also stickies under engine/transmission/maintenance. I have a cold air intake right now with 3inch piping. bout to improve on it to make it go underneath the battery and the radiator resevor. so ya use the search button.

CAI is better

CAI is better

This is totally a myth. The additional severe bends and extra length of piping negates the meager increase you would get from the colder air on an NA car. To be honest your stock intake is a CAI anyway - exactly how much do you think you're going to gain from this?
SRI is easiest only because you don't have to worry about rain/flooding and the slight increase in power will be about the same either way.
Trust me - I'm sure I've done 50+ SRI/CAI's on various members 6GC's and other Toyotas. wink.gif

I still say stock airbox with the resonator removed. Will pull cold air directly from the fender, which is also getting cold air thru the front grille while at speed. Done this with 2 Celica's now and is by far my favorite.

If you're talking about what I said, you don't need anything. You keep the stock air box in the engine compartment, same filter, everything. The resonator box is inside the fender. You need to pull back the inner-fender and there should be 3 bolts holding it in the car. Remove it and wallah, free improvement.

Yes, I did enjoy the CAI set-up! She screams like there's no rev limit. I also upgraded the filter for a Spectre high capacity flow one.

only thing that worries me about this set up is hydro-lock specially if it rains or snows alot in your area, if youre going to do this to your ride make sure youre equiped with a bypass valve i think AEM still makes them..

no need...unless you plan on going mud bogging and driving through small lakes you wont have a problem....its behind the wheel well plastic for one and even if a little water gets into the intake it wont hurt anything...i drove my car with that intake on there for a good year and a half with some severe weather and never had a problem with it

I personally have a Short Ram Weapon-R intake and I am very pleased with it.

It is also pretty much the cheapest that I've come across, I paid $120 shipped.

Heres a quick link to their site and to the intake I have. I got it from a different site where

it was cheaper though but just so you can have a look:

so PR3M4TUR3D3T0N4T1ON thinking about what you said the other day. CAI does not bring in any hot air into the intake manifold whats so ever. SRI although does becuase it is left out in the engine bay to collect all the heat from the motor. and cai sometimes have to long of piping.

so i thinking how i could get a cai and still keep the intake piping inside the engine bay without having to go into the fenders. i thought and remembered seeing this pic.

this is a good idea right. im thinking of going 2.5" piping and buying 2.5" x 5" AEM Dry flow filter. Since they require no oil and maintenance like K&N filters. or should i stay with K&N becuase in the long run it would outlast the AEM filter.

Does anyone have a set-up like this on their car. and if so Who has a stock air box? i'd like to buy one.

For a good/cheap cold air for an ST, buy a 90 degree elbow, 45 degree elbow and a couple of straight peices and route the piping down infront of the transmission beside the battery tray. I built one like that for Nader, it was great. Fit perfectly, worked nicely + we didnt have to go through the fenders/try and figure out thouse weird bends.

As for the AEM is better than KN filter arguement. I personaly like the KN ones better. Ive run them on every intake I've had on the celica, my old supra and my Civic right now. The AEM ones do need to be cleaned and maintained just as much or more than the KN ones. The only way i would run an AEM filter over a KN filter is if i was running a late model GM and was worried about burnin out the MAF, but since the celicas run MAPS, we r fine for either.

well looking back at this http://www.6gc.net/howto/build_st_cold_air_intake, it just seems like piping is too long and it will take forever for air to go from filter and back inside of intake.

as apposed to having an intake built inside of the stock air box with the K&N filter. it would be the same thing right. still cold air and even better than having it sit under the batter and radiator resevor. judging by the way this piping looks like. i know there is a little opening under the batter and radiator resevor that goes inside your fender. does the filter end up inside the driver side fender?

So does anybody have pics of the CAI intake set-up for the how-to make your own cai for st. the how to cai on the forums looks similar to the chrome intakes set-up on ebay that cost around $120.

if u think that cold air is huge look at a honds 4cyl. cai or even the one i had in my xrs was long as hell, and yes it will end up inside your drivers side fender. the one i was looking at on the forums was an early 90's cai for an accord that look pretty darn good, just a lil cutting involved

well after modding my cold air intake (which i thought was cold air for the longest time) i came out with this.

i have to say i like it better this way. i notice a bit of gain in hp and it sounds deaper from under the hood. probably like a 2hp gain from 3,000-4000rpm
Its similar to the injen sri. do you guys think i should buy a heat shield for it. looking here on ebay. and the heat shield doesn't cover the whole filter. any reason for that

then u would loose the gains of the more efficient intake because the filter wouldnt be able to suck air freely if it was comp. shrouded with a heat shield
