what about this, other forums are starting to do this....

QUOTE
No Deleting or Editing in For Sale Forums.
The Edit and Thread Deletion options have been turned off in the For Sale Forums as too many members of our site were being victimized by fraudulent sellers. By disabling these features, users can no longer post an item for sale, and then delete a thread when they've received payment, leaving the purchaser with no valid point of contact, or claim in court.

what are your thoughts....

QUOTE
You cannot edit your thread if you do so. Therefore, get it right the first time. If you posted incorrect information or similar, simply reply to your own thread, with the correct information so buyers are aware.

I've thought about this before. The only problem I see is that if someone is listing a bunch of stuff for sale, they can't edit their easy-to-reference list on the first post of what's sold and what's not. Potential buyers will have to sift through potentially lots of posts to find out if stuff is for sale.

What's everyone else think about this?

i like the idea, but i also see your point as well.
IMO it would be one less potential way for members to get scammed, which is a good thing, even if it means scrolling thru more posts.
is there a way to allow members to still edit just the 2nd line in the title of a thread, so that they could do somthing like:

FS: blah blah blah
:update page 3:: <~~being able to only edit this line?
that could be a way of getting the best of both worlds.

I think I could pull that off. I'll look at the code tomorrow and see.

I havn't dealt with codes for a website yet, but for programming it's some really hard stuff to learn. Not too bad once you have the hang of it. But definately not something you need to worry about unless you're planning of creating you're own site.

back to topic: The idea's good, but it might wind up being kind of a pain when you have to look at the original post on the first page and then go to the page that's updated. It just seems like it would be more of a hassel. But I'm always down for this site being a little more scammer free.

well, non-moderators dont have the power to delete post. Even their own. We need moderators to do that. Plus; if you quote someone, and they edit it later, it dosn't change the quote.

I get what you're saying, and I really like this idea. thumbsup.gif Being able to append, but not edit, your message body, and being able to edit the description in your first post in a buying/selling thread would be ideal, in my opinion. I glanced at the code yesterday and should be able to pull something like this off, but it'll be a fair amount of work.

What's everyone think about being able to append to the message body and edit the topic description only?

Appending the message body sounds like a good solution to me too. If someone really wants to remove an image or something like that for an item that's been sold, they could just overwrite it with a picture that says "SOLD" or something like that, to prevent those who don't actually read the posts from inquiring about an already sold item.

Well even if they cant edit their post, why cant they just copy and paste the first post, and edit it once you paste it into your new reply?

That might be what you were getting at GriffGirl, not sure though.
