Man, my dad does remodeling on houses and we have a TON of this stuff sitting around! I've never even thought about putting any in my car to deaden the noise. After I got my exterior the way I want it, I was going to start on the interior and my first project there is to kill the noise. I think I'll give this a try tonight or tomorrow, after I take some stuff off of my parts car

finished doing the doors today, havent tested yet (still drying/ getting rid of the glue smell) but i tried it on and it sounded like more bassy (could be just me tho) ill be doing where the rear speakers go tommorrow thanks to this thread

Well I put the foil-backed sound dampening stuff that I had under the passenger side of the carpet this weekend, and that alone has made an improvement. I'm still going to do the driver's side and the door panels. I don't expect all the road noise to go away, being on those 17s is a PITA for the noise, but I think it's gonna make a huge improvement!

I would be careful with that carpet padding. Remember that when it rains, you will get small amounts of water into your door panels. Just like how when you spill whine on a carpet, you can sometimes smell it later, the same may apply to this carpet padding. I'd hate going through all this work and then ending up with a mildew smell come winter time.

I have a few friends who work in commercial ducting, I'm going to talk to them and see if I can get a couple of rolls of the same stuff that second link talked about.

Putting the padding on the interior side of the weather barrier should be fine -- after all, this is the same area where you find wood and glued-on vinyl, the design has to keep water away. The water entering the door panel should be flowing through the inner panels of the door and kept in check by the weather barrier.

I posted a WTB ad on CL for some carpet pad remnants and have scored a roll that is apparently enough for a small room; I will be picking it up this week! Provided it's not raining next weekend (it's supposed to though) I'll be putting it in then. If it's not raining hard I'm puttin' it in anyway! I'll be using it on the insides of the door cards, under the driver's side carpet (I already did p/s) and under the hatch carpet. If I have enough left I will also put some behind the rear speakers, but probably not for another week or two.

I also rolled up some and shoved it in the rear speaker location. That, and the openings behind the rear hatch panels (where the jack goes, then the adjacent side).

Good thinking about those quarter panels in the hatch, I'll do that as well.

Yeah, I glued some to the back of the panels, as well as rolled some up and stuffed them in the openings. It works pretty well.

Alright,
I'm going to use the insulation material this weekend (along with replacing some speakers). I'll be getting the driver and passenger doors, quarter panels, and the whole trunk done. I'll post another comment here saying whether it was worth the money or not. As it stands right now, It's a pain to even talk to someone when pulling 70+ on the freeway. The resonator hits a sweet spot where you just can't talk that well, though 90% of the noise is just road noise. I'll let you guys know.

Yeah, but I did that nearly a year ago. It didn't do as well as I had hoped, but the padding FAR exceeded my expectations and I'd say it's better than Dynamat as well as more cost efficient.

I'm sorry but the only way carpet foam > dynamat is when you have installed dynamat INCORRECTLY, which you have done! It is not supposed to go on your door panels, it is designed to adhere to the actual structures of the car (the door, and actual body of the car). Dynamat, when installed correctly will greatly reduce road noise, while cleaning up the sound.

You failed to realize that I did put it on the actual door. I just put the small amount of what I had left onto the door panel.

Dynamat is also heavier - which for me, I couldn't care less about; however, it's pretty spendy and just not something I have the budget for. I would think Dynamat would be pretty good stuff too compared to carpet padding - in fact, of course it would be. But for the money, the padding is a very inexpensive alternative that's worth experimenting with.
