Is that foil and foam duct insulation waterproof? I like the sound proofing idea but I wouldn't want to risk the mold and mildew smell with the regular carpet padding if it were to get wet

I tested the duct insulation myself, and found it's not closed-cell foam, so it will soak up water. However, it seems to dry out well.

Keep in mind the Celica already came with a felt pad underneath the carpet, under the rear seats, and attached to the underside of the trunk carpet.

Only the 96+, wasn't it? I know sound insulation upgrades were added for 96+ so if I'm not mistaken, the 94-95 models didn't have that. Anybody care to shed some light on the matter for me?

My car is a '98 and has the padding under the carpet. Nonetheless, the extra padding I added helped out a lot. But since that was already there, the biggest difference came when I insulated the rear quarter panels behind the speakers and inside the trunk.

Yup,
Only on the '96+. The '94 and '95 (like myself) are stuck with no sound deadening at all. The mod to the doors made a noticeable difference, maybe 20% quieter, however the majority of the noise is coming from under the carpet/rear seats/trunk. I actually have the rolls to finish the rest of the car, but I've been putting it off (I'm going to wire up a 2 channel amp under the passenger sear, going to run the wires under the carpet. Used to power the 8" polks in the doors). It's one of those projects that I'll eventually get to.

However, I will update you all once it's done!

Guess the lack of underpad helps explain the lower weight of the early sixth-gens to the fifth-gens; I know every fifth-gen I've ever seen, including ST models, had the padding in all three areas I mentioned.

Alright guys,
Thought I'd finally finish the follow up. I've been sick the past few days, so I decided just to take a bunch of Tylenol and actually do something productive.

So For starters the whole process for getting the seats out, getting under the carpet, installing the foam, and getting it back together took about 3 hours. However, a good hour+ of that was spent working on my passenger seat which had coins stuck in the tracks... It wouldn't go forward, so getting to the back left (nearest the drive train) bolt was impossible till they were removed.


I am in a '94, and even though it looks like they used some sound deadening material... they didn't. The road noise was horrid, hence this install.







Once the passenger seat was taken out, everything went according to plan. I took it out for a quick test run, and I must say, For all of the '94-'95ers, DO THIS MOD! Just remember that I have under the carpet, in the door panels, under the rear seats, and the quarter panels done. It cut out so much road noise that it made driving more enjoyable then it already was. Since the resonator is right under the driver's seat, the noise that's generated by it is drastically cut. In fact, when you're low revving, engine noise is almost inaudible. However, if you give it a little bit of go, you can still hear that powerful 5sfe engine kick in laugh.gif

razor: what material did you use? Dynamat (spelling?) or some generic stuff, how thick is the material?
Looks really good, I'm planning to do this mod i the summers, don't got the time or money right now :S

razor, how did you do the door panels and about how many rolls of duct insulation did you use? i only did under the carpet and rear seats and it took 2 rolls.

Guys,
Check page 3 for more photos and more info as to what I've used.

The material is called "Frost King Duct Isolation" The product was 1/8th in thick and is sticky on one side, and has foil on the other side. I believe there was a link on either page 1 or 2 that takes you to a page where a guy used the same material in his Z06. He came out with the same results that I did.

Also, the Frostking material was only $15 a roll. It took 3 rolls to do under the carpet, in the door panels, the quarter panels, and under the rear seats. I plan on doing a 4th roll which will be dedicated to the firewall (behind the dash) and the trunk. So for $45 you can have your car sound MUCH quieter on the freeways, and won't rattle as much (if you have subs). Definitely worth it in my opinion.

Exactly. So as for the foil-backed insulation stuff, you should be good to go with normal use. I'm using it in my car now, and haven't had any problems with it whatsoever, which says a lot considering I'm in the pacific northwest and the ridiculous amount of rain we get here in the winter.

Edit: I just read the rest of the thread. I've got a '94, with basically no OEM upgrade options like power windows or upgraded sound system, etc. but I DO have the STOCK sound deadening stuff beneath the carpet. So it's not true that all 94-95s came w/out it.

I believe the under carpet padding was added to all of the 6gcs regardless of year model. If you owned a newer 6GC you'd know what I was refering to. Sometime after the facelift [or perhaps at the same time I don't remember] they added additional more high tech sounddeadening in response to consumer complaints about the roadnoise in the 6GC. One item they added were these little plastic cubes similar to the underside of the cover of a dot matrix printer [If you can understand what I'm talking about right now you have great intuitive skillz - this is one of those things I can never explain properly without pics or outside assitance]. Ever owned a dot matrix printer? Those things were loud as sin right? The cover that goes over the top that is made of clear plastic - the underside of them were of a cubular sound deadening design. There were similar sound deadening devises added to the newer 6gc's rear body panels. I understand there were other upgrades to the sound deadening but I am unfamiliar with what those other upgrades were.

Hadn't noticed them in the doors but I did notice them located next to the rear speakers - those are for sound deadening. Again - ever owned an old dot matrix printer? With the cover up for access the printer is loud as sin - close the printer while it's still printing and you notice a dramatic reduction in noise. Older theatres had a similar setup to reduce outside noise.
Again - supposedly this is just one of the things they did to reduce noise from outside the cabin.

^He's too young to know what a dot matrix printer even is.

Okay I take back my post about having that stuff though, I didn't read all the way and thought the stuff under the carpet was the sound deadening stuff that supposedly didn't come in 94-95s.
