There has always been much debate about what size speaker fits perfectly in the rear of the 6GC. Most audio shops will tell you to install a 6.5" speaker in this location but a 6.5" is actually too large for the stock mount and an extra hole or two must be made to accomodate the slightly larger size. While this is easily accomplished using nothing more difficult or rare than a few woodscrews to self tap the new locations [A method that has been used for a long time to great success] some of you perfectionists out there longed for a better fit. So I have endeavored to find it for you.
Now my speakers I used were the Boston Acoustic SL60 - Not a cheap speaker but well worth it IMO for the sound clarity. This speaker is sold as a 6" speaker with triangular mounting points along with adapter rings that bump the size up to 6.5" with the standard 4 hole mounting. I am sorry to tell you that while the 6" size fits perfectly in the stock mounting location, due to the odd three hole mounting you will still need to use wood screws to self tap and drill new holes. It's not difficult and I dare say anyone here can do it. That being said - if anyone else would like to research this farther by hunting down a 6" speaker with the standard 4 hole mounting I am 100% confident those will be a drop-in to stock mounting. I myself have already spent enough on this project and I will stop here as I'm perfectly happy with my current setup - for now. I'll be posting pics and a bit of an add on to the existing how-to for rear speakers in a little while. Enjoy. The fitment before making the two new holes - here you can see easily that all you would need are two woodscrews to complete the job with these speakers. You can also tell that if the speakers had had the standard 4 hole mounting they would be a direct drop in: When finished [The speakers come with grills and spacers so there are several ways you could eliminate the gap if you desire]: This post has been edited by DEATH: Sep 24, 2008 - 10:35 AM -------------------- ENGINE: '93 RC 3S-GTE/WRC CT-20b [18-20PSI] PERF: TRD/HKS/ARP/NGK/MSD/ACT/Blitz/STRI/APEX'i/TwosRus/GReddy/Magnaflo/KOYO SUSP: Tein/Bilstein/SusTech/ INT: SS-III SEATS/Toyota Hyper Sports EXT: WRC/TRD/404 Its a safety feature so that people like you don't end up killing themselves or everyone around them. Good job!! The wood-screw method is a long-used and dependable solution to brackets and mounting. Where are the other ones for that first speaker? -------------------- QUOTE (presure2 @ Nov 6, 2010 - 6:16 AM) Via FB: fcuking awsome!!! D-man FTW! Damn D-Man - most impressive. I will definitely recomend you to add a spacer behind the speaker, like I did in my car.

Actually I was gonna put the spacer in front of the speaker so as to protect the cone from rubbing on that plastic cutout like yours appears to be [Note I said appears - I'm sure you would know and would have fixed the problem if it was]. Really it's somewhat immaterial seeing as the covers will be over and you will not be able to see that gap - but seeing as I try to do every job to the utmost I will in fact be correcting that gap.
These pictures were just in progress to illustrate for those who wish for a better fitting speaker. BTW - I like your setup. Edit - I read your thread and I now see your point - you feel without the spacer and foam it will loose the enclosure effect. There is little to no enclosure effect there - you would first have to seal up the rest of those plastic covers all the way around and by the door too. There is, in otherwords, little or no compression there at all. looks nice tho. IDK about feel [That may be all in your head man] but it definetly looks better without the gap. As I said I intend to put my spacer in front of the cone so as to provide some protection - I have kids back there often and they always want the music on - last thing I need is for them to get in a fight and ruin the speakers

I have to agree that the sound will make no difference rather you use spacers in the front or rear of the speaker. there is no compression there, so putting spacers behind the speaker only make it look nice while your grille is off. I have to agree with DEATHS thoughts on using the spacers as "crash-bars" to protect the speakers; And it'd look just as good. Give it kind of a sunken look w/o the grilles, but the backseat looks retarded w/o the stock grilles anyway. My convertible doubles as a damn Tacoma (lol) so it'd be beneficial to me when i was hauling stuff arround, to know that if something wails upon my panel, that my speakers would be safe.
And i'm sure we could get a large show of hands to attest to my rough-ness with car related items. Where is playr? He'll explain my methods in a way that'll make you piss your pants laughing -------------------- QUOTE (presure2 @ Nov 6, 2010 - 6:16 AM) Via FB: fcuking awsome!!! D-man FTW! the spacer issue i see as a non-issue, but put the darn grill back in, it looks like crap otherwise |

Oh yeah totally - it would look very bad without the grills. D-man and I finished the install yesterday so it has spacers and grills now - looks stock but daaaamn does it sound nice. So clear even at high volumes.

I used JBL GTO-627's, these are a 6" speaker which come with mounting rings to increase this to 6.25" or 6.5" if needed.
For the Celica these are not needed and the speaker fits perfectly into place using the original 4 screw holes - no modifications needed! I reattached the foam surround from the stock speakers to fill the gap between the speaker and the trim panel. Now they aren't the prettiest of speakers with the grilles off but they sound great paired with the GTo-607c's up front and I love the way that they tweeter is just visible through the grilles when they are put back on. ~LST |

In my own thread Daftboy informs me that both the front and rear speakers are 17cm, therefore, what's the difference in your front and rear speakers from JLBL?
