Kumamoto is a nice place. I lived in Kagoshima for about 1-1/2 years. I actually was just back visiting Japan a few weeks ago and passed through the area. Enjoy your time there.

I'm currently in Japan as part of the JET programme, perhaps you've heard of it? It's a program through which the Japanese government hires young uni graduates from English-speaking countries to work in schools and assist with English education. It's a so-so job but it got me in Japan which is what I wanted =).
Driving in the mountains is fun for the scenery and all, but it's not all like Initial D. Most touges are really narrow and poorly maintained, and a lot of them don't even have guardrails.
I know "hashiriya" spots on the roads around where I live, the most famous probably being Mt. Aso which has a long stretch of touge road called the Milk road that's pretty popular.
On a side note I have a pretty decent Japanese level so if anyone needs help for ordering stuff from Japan or whatever, I'll be more than happy to help out.

how much do u get paid for the JET program?
im a japanese native born in japan but raised in cali.
i cant wait till i go back to japan after my degree.

I get paid 3 600 000 Y a year, which is enough, but yeah, I'm looking for a real job these days. When I bought the celica my boss told me JET's aren't supposed to drive sports cars (well they shouldn't be able to afford them anyway)... JET's not a bad job, but the selection process is kinda strict and it comes with a few minor annoyments that sometimes pile up and make your life miserable at times. But if you want to give it a shot, and have questions, just give me a shout =)
I tried to check the make of my exhaust and the only markings I was able to make out were RS. Is that a known maker? The only way to make sure would be to jack the car and check under, but there's no way I can do that now....
On a side note, I drove my celi all the way to Oita this weekend, which was nice, except for the ridiculously low speed limits on japanese highways... 80km/h on the kyushu expressway and 70 on the oita expressway... yeah, we have streets in my hometown with 70km/h limits =) A fun drive, but I didn't get to test my celi's performance as much as I'd liked...
