After trying to explain the similarities with the celica, coupe, and curren, ST, GT, GT4, 5sfe, 7afe, 3sgte, etc,... pretty much everything that is on this site, to a friend of mine he brought up a really good question. In the Curren models, the Currens that have the 3sfe (FS and XS) and the 4sfe(TS) would a 3sgte swap be similar as the ST (in US) swap? For example, having to get a new tranny (GT, or MR2T) plus having to new motor mounts?
As for the ZS model with the 3sge motor I know it would be kind of dumb to swap when it would be cheaper i think to just add a turbo. Anyway, if i can get some feed back on my first question i would appreciate it. Thanks, David This post has been edited by ToYCeLi8: Jan 30, 2005 - 8:34 AM |

From what I understand the "S" series blocks, 5SFE, 4SFE, 3SFE, share the same motor mount locations. Only when you get into the "A" series blocks, 7AFE, 4AGE, 4AGZE do you have to worry about motor mount locations and transmissions. It will almost always be easier to swap an engine if the series you are putting in matches the series you are taking out.

yes, you are right.
As long as i saw 3SFE engines, and how they are mounted, they do look like they are mounted the same as 5S or 3SGE. So i think you wount need new motor mounts, only the new trany, cuz 3SFE produces only 135 hp, so the tranny wount hold on for a long time.... Also is it the same tranny, and there are number of people that have used it here. |

yes, it is practicly the same tranny as 5S uses (maybe it is COMPLEATLY the same), but how much do you think it would hold on the power increase in 100%? it was made for holding 135hp, NOT 225 - 255 hp... so basicly im looking forward and thinking loud.. it would be better to chage to somthing stronger like MR2 trans that was developed to hold the horses better i think, or maybe people who created these transmissions at toyota are compleate morons and they dont know what they are doing?

All s series engines will bolt to the car the same way, and all s series trannys will bolt to the engine, but not necisarily all transmisions that bolt to the engine will fit in the car (IE the altezza trans, because it is RWD)
As for the GT tranny not holding up, so far my tranny feels fine. Actually quite strong, and I beet the hell out of it. |

Thank you very much peoples Now my next question would be are the other models that i mentioned drums in the rear or disc all around? Would a XS and FS be better off doing the conversion like an ST owner?

btw, acording to the sticky about engines in this section, turboing a 3sge is impractical and not the same as a 3sgte.

Theres someone stateside who did a front end Curren conversion with 3sgte swap - although it was a Celica you can still do it.
Also the 3sge is high compression and the 3sgte is low compression thats why turboing a 3sge will yield different results than a 3sgte. It'll be more powerful however less reliable. -------------------- |

from my understanding, if you have a 3sge engine, ait would be easier to just add a turbo and call it good.......although i do know that you can mount a 3sgte engine in a curren rather comfortably.......someone correct me if im wrong though..........although in my entire time in japan ive never seen anyone swap the two engines before though

And add the cylinderwall oil feeds. And then add a intercooler. And a new ECU. And bigger fuel injectors. And a bigger fuel pump. And a bunch more sensors. And come cams, valves and assorted other bits. There's a lot more difference between the GE and the GTE than "just a turbo". -------------------- JDM ST205

I know a guy here in NZ who had done this (sorry no pics)
was very nice (sold now) was going to do a GT4/curren front combo like malsopo's SS-Four (although at the time I didn't understand what he meant) -------------------- |

[/quote] Im using the tranny already on it converting my st to awd looking forward to the hard ship ha ha. Do you mean the brackets that conect the mounts to the body if so from what i can see the engine will just slide in. But ill let you know for sure as i will hopefully switching them over in a couple of weeks just sorting my self out with a little run around while working on my st. |
