Power Folding Mirrors Help-, pass. mirror get stuck on closing Options

wired mine up today and the drivers side opens and closes perfectly. My pass. side opens perfectly but on the close cyle it get stuck. i hear a clicking sound like its the plastic gear thats slipping. Unless i help it close, it will continue to click continuously. Took it appart but didnt know how to get into the gearbox...


any suggestions? maybe grease in a certain spot? was i screwed on my mirrors?? thanks for any help.

it's doing that because the worm gear the drives the mirror to retract is no longer secure on the motor shaft.
what's happening is as the worm gear spins, it forces itself outwards from the shaft. however the black cover that covers the motor is keeping it from falling off thus pushing the worm gear back. it's difficult to explain in words, you'll understand when you take your mirrors apart.

i fixed mine (my other set of mirrors that i sold) using 1/4 of a drop of superglue so have some handy.

1. remove mirror glass carefully! don't crack it!





2. undo 3 screws holding the white mirror adjuster. remove mirror adjuster.






3. under 3 or 4 screws holding the metal frame base to the housing. remove housing.





4. remove black covers of the mirror motor mechanism (2 pieces)





5. this worm gear (blue arrow) is not secure to the shaft. if you pull on this it will slide. so basically you need to glue it back on the shaft securely but DO NOT get glue where the shaft goes in the motor so watch for that. remember all you need is 1/4 or less of a drop of superglue. the hole in the worm gear is tiny.

This is exactly what happened to me! I took the entire mirror apart, including the box that has all of the gears in it. I would not recomend this, as there are 5 or 6 different sized gears that have to go in a certain order. At this point, I was not expecting to even use this mirror, I was just curious to see what was going on. I somehow managed to get the gears in all the right order, and put it back together and it worked! Then I tested it 20+ times, still worked great. Until I accidentally hooked it up to where it tried to open when it was already open, so it "hyperextended" and went backwards. When I put it back to the normal position it did the same stuff as before: clicked really loud and didn't move unless I pulled on it a little. I'm getting a replacement mirror sent to me, as it didn't work in the first place and it was just a fluke that I got it to work temporarily. Knowing my luck, I would've painted and intstalled them, and then a week later it would've stopped working!

I know it's a weird questions Azn, but could this also be the issue with a sunroof? I have the exact same clicking sound, whether it's retracting or opening really.

this is indeed the way to fix a bad folding mirror. I had to do the same thing with mine. I also had one of the gears inside pop out of its place a little bit, try this first and if it still does it then check into the gearbox.

yes it could be a gear slipping like this or even a stripped gear itself

got my mirror this far:



worm gear is firmly attatched to the motor and the other blue gear is spinng fine, any other suggestions at this point?


Edit: ok i tested the mirror without the housing and with the worm gears exposed. The gears spin perfectly on the close/open cyle. Only thing is that when they spin counter clock wise (close cycle) the mirror stops closing and there is a click in the gear box. any pre-cautions when opening the gear box?

on the back of the motor where you have the red and white wires running to it, there should be contacts on the back of the black piece (red arrow in pic) iirc. if so try manually inversing the polarity on the wires to force the motor to close.. this is where a 12V power source becomes useful.

if that doesn't make it close, then something is physically holding it back. i've gone as far as removing the motor and the white round piece but haven't gone to see how the 'gearing' is set up.. so you're on your own from there. good luck dude.

ok im down to the gear box, and started removing a few gears one at a time. i think found the problem. I noticed that the gears are stacked above each other and held in place by a pin running down the center of both gears....
ill try and get pics up later so it makes sense.

one of the pins is loose. the base where the pin sits got widen out. im gonna try and super glue the pin so it doesnt move. if it does move, the gear's teeth wont make contant with the other gear. thats where the problem is.

what a ****ing mess... ive been on this **** for more than 5 hours... still cant get it to close right. I know what needs to get fixed but dam its hard.
