So I dont know if its just bad sales reps selling me whatever they want or whatever but it seems like i rip thru subwoofers really fast (either the VC blows or with my infinity subwoofers the wire that connects to the spider on the cone actually physically seperates) what would yall suggest for a 1000 watt (MAX) amp (kenwood excelon) ? I was rockin 2 12" eclipse titanium subs that just blew after about a year and a half of use/abuse which is the longest ive ever made any subs last. they would usually blow after a couple of weeks and then the sales rep would act like i went out of my way to destroy it when i would try to get it replaced.

Dude, read the woofers requirements and only give it that much. otherwise you'll continue to plow thru them. I've had some b.s. no name brands last for years when powed properly, but when you BLAST the power to them, you'll eat thru em like skittles.

Trust me, i figured this out back when i thought more power=better, and 1500W and took out 2 12's, then wired up a single ten untill i could afford more 12's... laugh.gif you should have seen that cone fly laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif

I typically try to keep my subs RMS level somwhere around the peak output of the amp. It requires you to get more expensive subs than you would probably need otherwise but ten again they never blow. R-F subs have been very good to me. I once made two R-F 15"s last through 8 years of abuse - seriously I was so sick of those subs I was half relieved when someone sabotaged them at a meet. biggrin.gif

If I knew who it was they would already have been educated wink.gif Fcukers switched my amp from low pass to high pass - nothing kills a woofer faster than shoving tweeter frequencies through the woofer's VC @ ~1000watts. mad.gif

I have had my JL's in a few cars now....they are powered to the proper level and have lasted me awhile. Don't worry about the max watts worry about the RMS of each sub..mine are think 150 RMS each. I have them bridged together so 300 RMS max. I bought a amp that max's out at 350 RMS so I just ajust the amp to 7/8 up , maybe less..try to keep the bass boast knob down as well...You can read on the sub specs they also haea tolarce level.. which you should try to match on the amp.

Same thing I said - obviously this is a good recipe for durability. Not getting greedy with the bass knob is another good point. Most of the time good quality subs blow due to user error kindasad.gif

Yeaaaaahhhhhhh no.

I have experience that shows that you needen't buy a special amp for your special woofer, but rather if you have 2 12's, DONT max out the Gain, Bass, VO control, ensure that you use the Low Freq. settings or run an external X-Over and turn down the freq. and (ect.) Well, that's how poor people like me do it. SURE i COULD go out and buy a new amp for every sub i have, OR i could just NOT abuse the woofers and they'll play just fine wink.gif

But I may be wrong... I've finaly had mine begin to go out on me in the last few months, and they are litterly no-name, Dirt cheap, Flea-Market specials. biggrin.gif Had them for.... 7 going on 8 years now; i believe? Never Ever bought a matching amp. thumbsup.gif Control is the key IMHO. smile.gif

1 more point to the above Remember you have to run in new speakes the sam as a new motor. wink.gif

Low to medium power for the 1st 10 or 20 houres of play then gradualy build up to max.

Like a motor most of the werar and dammage is from new and from cold.

But as allways this is just my $0.02 biggrin.gif

No that's VERY true. Also what have you been doing to match the amps output frequencies to the required frequencies of the sub and limiting the amount of higher frequencies that the sub gets? Any kind of crossover and/or lowpass filters? That could very well be your problems right there.

Set the gain CORRECTLY with a signal tone and multimeter and you will not blow another speaker.

werd mikew04, i tried that after i went thru my alpines (again, which the salesman swore up and down would be a perfect match for my system) but no one in CO seems to have the appropriate equipment. Sadly the song that blew my subs was Hero by Nickleback.. and after i got my system where i wanted it (as far as adjusting the EQ etc etc, ) the only thing i ever changed around on it was the fade from the front to rear (have car seat, dont like speakers that close to sons ear) but i had it set the same for about a year. so match the rms with the peak on the amp? or just match rms all around?

DO NOT SET THE AMP TO RUN THE PEAK AT ALL TIMES!! there is a reason it's called the peak rolleyes.gif a good rule of thumb is to match the sub's RMS to your amp's output. Okay?

yeah, if you peak out the amp, idc what subs your using, they wont last long

although if your still looking to get new subs, Kicker makes some amazing subs. Awesome quality and sound great, although they can be alittle pricey.
my amp has a bass control that goes to my driver seat, I have the actual amp set to a max of 70% for bass, and with the bass control i can go anywhere inbetween 0%-70% depending on the song, you NEVER wanna turn everything up to 100%.

see thats the thing, as far as the controls on the amp were concerned i left them turned all the way down (gain, input sensitivity) and only dinked around with the controls from the head unit, so lets say i have a bass control on the head unit that can increase bass i would usually put it at 9/15 and bring the actual volume of the system usually around 28/35 (or 32/35 when it comes to my mp3 player because it plays back more quiet than a cd) so i dunno if having the head units bass up to a 9 out of 15 would really qualify as "peaking out the amp" but any advice would be great since the local shops are apparent douches, again thanks to everyone for all the input

Using the bass adjustment on the headunit is not helping. I've seen lots of subs blow that way. You are asking the amp to overdrive the sub.

Having the level and gains on the amp all the way down is a waste also.

When you crank up the volume and have the bass adjustment turned up you are very likely to produce distortion, now feed that signal into the amp and your subs have no chance.

Set your bass adj at 0. Put in a cd with what you normally listen to. Turn up the radio to max, if you have a separate amp for the mids and highs unplug it for now. If not turn it up until you hear distortion then back off a little. Now on the sub amp turn up you level until you hear distortion and turn the level back a touch.

If you have a separate amp for mids and highs adjust it the same way. Up until distortion then back off a touch.

Listen to some music at different volumes and decide if there is enough bass for you. If not use the gain a touch at a time to adjust the amount of bass. You may need to readjust the gain also.

Doing this will allow you to run at max power without distortion. Distortion will chew up subs.

^ x2. The best way to get a quality sound system is to take the time and do your homework, and match everything up. NEVER crank your amp, yada yada yada. It's all been said on here too many times already. Just know what you are doing with it, and if you don't know anything about a sound system, take it to a shop and let the professionals handle it.
