The pilot bearing is the same as the throwout bearing and should come in your clutch kit. Yes, you should replace it.

No pilot bearing, they are smaller than what you need and do come in some clutch kits but you won't use it. You need a throwout bearing, Toyota calls it a release bearing.

You should replace your rear main seal while you have the transmission off.

taken from the stickies, maybe it'll help

Also I think the rear mount bracket is different, make sure that you have the one for the manual tranny.

the auto rear mount fits fine, just has an extra hook for the auto shifter cable that will no longer be used.

now the next question I have is this...let's say I decide not to use the 96 ECU and use the 1997 A/T ECU in there until I get a 97 M/T ECU (about 2 weeks), we complete the tranny swap, then will the car still start/be drivable ? will there just be a CEL and the OD button blink ? you dig ?

we used the 96 ECU and everything works fine. no warning lights, blinking lights, CEL. car starts, drives, runs better than ever wink.gif

I did a good amount of research on this project and people still were not sure of some things and couldn't answer some of my questions and I was missing some parts when the time came to do it, so I thought I'd post a more comprehensive list of the parts we used for my swap.
This is in my 97 ST

Manual transmission (mine is a from a 95 ST)
Manual ECU (if you have OBDII get an OBDII ECU)
Shifter cables
Clutch slave cylinder (was attached to my tranny)
Clutch master cylinder (mine came from a junkyard with hard-line attached)
Clutch hard-line (from master cylinder)
Clitch rubber line (from the hard-line to slave cylinder)
Clutch pedal assembly (w/ bracket & bolts)
Brake pedal (bracket and bolts not necessary)
Motor mount (drivers side is the only one necessary, difference is in the bracket)
Flywheel (w/ 6 bolts)
Clutch (new)
Pressure plate (new)
Throwout bearing (new)
Fork (came in the tranny)
Shifter assembly (I got the TRD which came with a knob)
Shift boot (bought new OEM from dealer, about $25)
Manual shifter surround (auto shifter surround does not have the clips to hold the shift boot)
4 C clips (for shifter cables and rubber clutch line, about $0.95 each from the dealer)
Transmission fluid (Synchromesh)
Brake fluid (for clutch cylinder)
1-1/4" holesaw (makes it easier to drill the hole in the firewall for the master cylinder)

if anyone wants pictures or has any questions you can ask me, Manny (presure2), or Dustin (Batman722)

bringing this from the dead....^^^^^^^

id that list for a auto-manual on a ST??...will it the list work on a GT as well?

yes, pretty much. there is something different with the axles (or maybe just one of the axles) for a GT but I think the auto axles still fit... not 100% sure though

The auto's axles is a tad shorter than the manual's...its probably will work with some mods but im going with manual's axels...also guys if your going to swap a 3sgte and ur car is an auto then this info is important, the engine's mounting points wont align correctly with the chassis's you will need to do some mod of ur own to get it aligned.

the alignment tool isn't really for installing the tranny. You use it to align the flywheel and the clutch disc before you tighten the pressure plate to the flywheel, because then you just align the input shaft on the transmission to go through the clutch/flywheel assembly and into the block. You really should just get a new clutch kit. It doesn't really matter that the clutch and release bearing have low mileage, if it's used and wasn't you who used it, you don't know what kind of shape its in, even by looking at it. OEM replacement clutch kits are pretty cheap and come with everything you need.

put up a WTB for a GT clutch alignment tool, someone who's changed their clutch must still have theirs and be willing to send it to you.

I have a 7A, can't help you there

I just did the swap on a 240sx. I had to cut out the old auto pilot bearing with a dremel/1/4" grinder. That sucked. Puller would not pull out the auto bearing. Make sure you allow for this kinda stuff in your swap. Also they have very cheap exedy clutches in ebay. Mine for the 240 was like $92 shipped, legit exedy full kit.
