So ever since the temp here in Minnesota has dropped to 5 degrees my afm has been sticking. How I know, well my car would struggle to idle and would run pig rich. I didn't know this was the issue, until one morning I went out and checked the afm. Well the flapper door was stuck open. I went inside and warmed it up. No checking that the flapper door will close on its own, I decided to bundle it up like a baby. SO since my girl friend wouldn't let me use her scarf I decided to use one of her t shirts and long sleeve tees hahaha.

I doubt this will harm the afm, but ever since this, my car starts up and idles and runs golden.

Heres a pic of the afm bundled up like a baby.

And the true test. So since the roads have been slick I haven't been driving her for the past 2 days. And guess what the temps for the past 2 days have been? Yesterday -5 and Today -24 thats without wind chill.

Went out today and fired her up, started no problem let her warm up and boosted her no issues. Gotta love the baby wrap mod. hahaha

And this is why people Hate the AFM. Now I just picked up a 89 Celica GT hatch And the timing just broke on me. So I will do the timing belt, but maybe within the year I will swap in a 3rd gen NO AFM and do an awd conversion. I know people will say why not just buy an alltrac. Well, I want a super long project and don't want to get rid of it.

Ah yes... another reason to throw the afm into a pit of fire and piss on it.

my favorite quote of the day!

do you think header wrap would work better since its a better temp insulator?

I guess, but what I was trying to do is block off the cold not keep the heat in. What ever prevents the afm spring from sticking would work.

The only way the spring could stick in the cold would be if you had some dirt or moisture in there. Normally springs dont stick with changes in weather.
If you do, you can clean it out with some carb cleaner.

I was thinking about spraying it, but afraid to damage the afm. I really don't have any money left to spend on this car. I did notice there was a lot of blow by in the afm. Cleaned that all up with a rag.

You wont damage anything. Just spray the air passage way and flapper door with carb cleaner. Its all air and water tight.
