well first off

its blown not blowed...sorry just a pet peave..

2nd. yea man i bet its the head gasket like we all talked about last night. get like 2 or 3 of them after its fixed that should fill that gap...also i would definitely keep the turbo set up...its worth it in the end.

so what was the whole deal with the manifold not sitting flush?

and are you sure its a piston ring that you blew?

Piston rings aren't really that much money.

First off, not to nag or anything, but before you did a turbo setup...I would've had that checked out. I would've had the whole eengine gone over...but a piston ring isn't too hard...just gotta take apart the block man...little manual labor never heart anyone. See if you can get TopEnd to get you some gapless pistons rings and forged pistons...

Also...while you're already ripping apart you engine...replace anything else you see that might have some wear in it. Good learning experience for you I think...or a good example for anyone here.

Jon

i havent had any problems with my 7afte project, other than the need for quality gaskets, which i should get in the next few days when i get my car back from the body shop.

i also spent a year getting parts and 3 weekend of labor making sure everything fit right and solving little issues.

Yea I believe the only reason I had problems was casue I had too many friends working on the car and i told them we need to get teh oxygen sensor in and they said no no and i said yes and then they cranked it and it ran lean as hell and i believe that blew one of the gaskets around the piston.....hopefully thats all it was but the only thing im buying is the 2 bar map sensor and i may buy injectors depending on how much everythigns going to cost!!!! but IM not giving up now on this turbo project not after all this~~~~~~~~

Matt you should never stack HG's they WILL blow out sooner or later and cause alot of problems.

Cant you just pull the pistons out with the crank and not touch the head? When I had my oil pan off I thought that was the rods right there.

that sucks.

over the few weeks it took me to get everything on and running, i put the stock manifold back on and ran NA several times.

it made the friends that helped me very mad, but i didnt care, lol. my car, my choice on what to do and where to stop.

but i must admit, that they did help, just for the fact that they had different views on solving problems, as with who ever was designated the TB and the person that worked under the car.

when its my car, i exert full control. its my parts and my money and i dont want people rushing through steps just to see the finished product.

next time you keep the keys in your pocket and the battery outside the car.

Shop will charge that much cuz they're charging you for their lunch break...just kidding. They are smoking you right there...cuz they know you have no clue what kind of labor is involved. If I were you, I'd go to that shop again and ask them exactly what is involved...and gather information form here. so you know the exact process. Then go to a different shop and tell them exactly what you will need done...the variance in pricing is amazing for someone who doesnt know squat about the job being performed and a person that knows how it's done.

Better yet, gather as much information and do it yourself. Just don't have all your buddies over...I can see it now...
"No, we don't need the pistons rings in for now...let's take them out to make sure that's the problem and start it up. It will work trust me!" lololol

hehe, that's a great method. I've never heard it before.... I have one question: Are you guys running oil cooled, water cooled, or oil and water cooled turbo's?

Jon

ALL turbos need oil

only some need water.

my turbo is the water and oil kind but im not running the water cooling just yet. the only reason it is there is to increase oil life. simply letting the car cool down with a turbo timer makes up for not having the water cooling.

but it is worth doing, i just didnt care for the extra work when my setup was working just fine.

Sorry, its peeve, not peave,,, rolleyes.gif

Seriously though, do you think you burned a hole in a piston or just cooked the rings? if you need pistons and are keeping the turbo, can you get lower compression ones, or have a machine shop see if they can relieve the stock pistons to lower the compression some?

and btw, the pistons will not come out the bottom without removing the crank (if then, main bearing saddles usually prevent it) and that could be much more work than pulling the head, and you still have to install them from the top, no way to get the ring compressor to work from underneath.

Jon

yes, its perfectly safe, although your oil wont last as long but oh well, use synthetic and change every 3k miles

i just finished rebuilding my turbo so im putting it in back in tomorrow as with the new car alarm with remote start.

i am really hoping to get to LACR this weekend
