Im sure this has been covered, but I cant find any threads on it. Basically, I was just wondering how much work / modification is required to throw a 5sfe into an ST, simply because of my circumstances if I find a decent ST shell then that will be my only option... Are there major differences between the ST and GT that make this complicated?

There are MUCH better swap options that bolt right up to the ST... the 5sfe is not worth it at all into an ST.

If your looking for a swap please go 3S-GTE. Don't bother with the 5s. There's not much power to be had out of it and there's not too much room for growth unless you turbo it. For the price of swapping a 5s and then throwing on a turbo you could get a 3s which has much more potential.
On E-bay you can find a 3s for $2,000 plus around $700-$800 for shipping.

I dont agree with the 3s having "More potential" than the 5s-fe as you can easily throw a ge head on the 5s and do away with just as great of an engine, especialy a 98+ block with forged parts and a metal HG. But certainly when it comes down to cost YES the 3s-gte is a much better choice.
Power and reliability I would rate 3s-gte 5 Power 4.5 Reliability, 5s-fte(or gte) 4.5 power 5 reliabity. (Out of 5)

Other Options:
2az-fe (Scion tC) - 157hp
3s-ge (JDM GT engine, no turbo) - 160hp
and most other L4 or inline L6 engines produced by toyota will fit, but the amount of work you will do would skyrocket

I understand what you mean and I guess I was being a little vague on my meaning. Yes the 98+ with forged internals is good but I was referring to the cost effectiveness of the two as separate projects from where he's starting. I also meant by power potential as the 3s with a few mods can make over 300 hp and you'd need to be running a lot of boost on the 5s to get there. Sorry if I unintentionally started an argument but from where he's starting I think we can both agree the 3s-gte is the better choice.

5s-fe runs 9.5:1 compression, 3rd gen 3s-gte runs 8.5, swapping the pistons will get u 8.8

higher compression = less boost for equal power, but slightly more dangerous.
but for a swap drop and drive, yea 300hp is less work on the 3s-gte engine was designed that way to begin with.

5s would require a few engine mods.

frown.gif me no likey argument, 3s cost effectiveness 30% less than 5s-fte easily!

since you have a GT (wrecked) you can easily swap over the 5s/tranny to the ST shell. You would need the 5s/tranny/axles/mounts/brackets/b pipe and the wire harness/ecu from the GT and bolt all that into the ST shell. The only thing is the pass side GT mount bolts to the ST chassis differently than the GT, so you need to drill 2 new holes for the bracket.

the only other issue I see is that your GT is a 95 (OBD I) and any shell 96+ is OBD II which means that getting the car inspected will possibly be bad. Look into your state's inpection laws for more details.
