I posted in OT, because this is relating to my Altima, But the people on the Nissan forums aren't helping me at all. We've got several super-geniuses here that may be able to point me in the right direction.
Okay, this issue is that (automatic tranny) When in park or neutral, everything is fine, But if I知 sitting at a dead stop in Drive, then the car starts shaking, badly (as if it weren稚 getting fuel), the RPM drops below the norm, and sometimes will even die. But if I come to that same stop, and slip it into neutral, then it値l idle just fine. (witch is how i've instructed the misses to drive it right now) Also it isn稚 shifting right. Normally it値l shift at about 2500RPM, but here lately, it値l goto almost 3500 RPM before shifting, and makes this HORRIBLE ear poping noise before it does. Like a jet engine going into a high altitude makes your ears pop, Same feeling, Less intense. I know I知 not about to find a KA24DE instruction manuel here, But could someone just point me in the right general direction on this one? I値l figure out the application myself, I just need to understand the concept behind whats happening. Thanks ya値l. -------------------- QUOTE (presure2 @ Nov 6, 2010 - 6:16 AM) Via FB: fcuking awsome!!! D-man FTW! Damn D-Man - most impressive. I just said that. Yes it does, in park or neutral is fine, only dies in drive.

Well, in all honestly it sounds like your tranny needs to be serviced...the noise and higher RPM before shifting points to the transmission. Is the engien still responsive and got all his "power" ?

me thinks its the torque converter. aka the clutch for automatic transmissions. its supposed to disengage below a certain speed when you are stopping, to me, it sounds like it is not disengaging.
i dont think that's easy to replace. -------------------- ◊◊◊ My F/S Thread! ◊◊◊

Does the transmission lag between shifting from D to N and from N to D.
It should engage immediately. If the transmission shifts really high in the rpm it could be the speed sensor or the throttle position sensor ( depending on the year of the car). The sad thing about transmission are, once you have a problem inside transmission the only thing you can do is to change the transmission fluid (i don't think your car has a transmission filter) and cross your fingers. If the transmission requires a major repair you would need to take the transmission to a special mechanic because transmission require a million specially tools to take apart and replacement parts are through the dealership orders only. |

Other than checking the level of the transmission fluid, there's not much else to do other than service the transmission. Sounds like the torque converter may be bad but that's just a guess, could be anything.

Try pressing the brakes a few times while the car is in park. If the idle changes and you are able to reproduce the problem, then you have a big vac leak somewhere.

Its not as bad as you think, its just like changing a clutch and flywheel. But the darn thing costs as much as a used tranny, so I rather just buy a new transmission that way at least you know its working right then slap it on and cross your fingers you fixed the problem. |

Probably it's silly idea and since I do not have any experience with AT tranny It's more than probable... still... have you checked spark plugs, distributor and spark plug wires? Just in case...

Answer my question boy...wat about in low gear? yes, in low it still does the same thing. Does the transmission lag between shifting from D to N and from N to D. It should engage immediately. If the transmission requires a major repair you would need to take the transmission to a special mechanic because transmission require a million specially tools to take apart and replacement parts are through the dealership orders only. No, it seems to do the actual "shifting" just fine... Just getting it to shift can be an issue... OBDII it's a 98; i believe it's TPS... And that makes a butt-load of sense, that would prove the problem at drive and at idle... A million eh? I've only got a few hundred thousand... ... Seriously, specialty tools? That sounds intimidating. For example, what? Probably it's silly idea and since I do not have any experience with AT tranny It's more than probable... still... have you checked spark plugs, distributor and spark plug wires? Just in case... not silly. But i recently replaced the headgasket, ( -------------------- QUOTE (presure2 @ Nov 6, 2010 - 6:16 AM) Via FB: fcuking awsome!!! D-man FTW! Damn D-Man - most impressive. OK, not a million tools. Depending on your transmission, you might have to buy a special tool to drive a bearing in or puller tool to separate certain parts. http://atoztool.com/trans_specialty_tools.html
Another annoying thing about transmissions are, you have to have everything installed exactly the way you put it back in. If you lost or forgot a C clip you pretty much shafted yourself. Does your car idle low in N or P? Should be around 1k rpm. If your car is idling low it can cause it to stall out when you put it in a drive gear. Strange.... your car is a 1998. It should throw an engine code if tps or speed sensor is out of tolerance. Does your car shift at redline when you floor it? |

either tranny fluid is just nearly non existant or the TC is dying.
