Find an amp that matches your subs. You say your subs are 400 watt RMS, 800 watt max. Find an amp that matches that.

really there is a performance chart, if you go under the matching wattage, you don't maximize potential. If you go over, there is a chance of damaging something. Again, that is a combo of things like bridging techniques.

so, is it better to have a too small amp or should the amp be bigger then the sub(s)? (and then you just have to be carefull with the volume?)

Smaller amp mening less power (watts)...

And sure, the exact same power must be the optimal but i don't have that option... smile.gif

ok well i was thinking about a 1000 watt amp and wiring the subs in parallel to split it 500x @ 2ohms so that would keep both sub around 100-150+ watts or so over the 400 rms rating correct me if im wrong, but is this a good idea?

No. Bad idea. I thought the same thing once. I was buying a new sub the next day, just from keeping my amp 150 watts over RMS for the sub. When the sub is rated for a certain wattage continuously, that's what it means. Not continuously 150 watts over that.

Also, if your subs are 4 ohm like you said in the first post and you push them at 2 ohm, you're buying new subs for sure. kindasad.gif

Its better to be slightly less under than way over.
