New computerDOA Options

Hey everyone,i don't know too much about computers but i bought computer parts(moterboard,ram,video card,processor,harddrive,) from new egg.com.me and a buddy put it together but its not working.the computer turns on but their no display, it turns on but doesn't turn off.if any know has any idea it would be great thanks

You might want to check that you connected the extra power line to the video card. Most cards these days need them, and its fair common to forget to hook it up.

does it make any beeps upon powering up? if so, you may have some POST (power on self test) errors and figure out the beep sequence to determine what type of errors you may be getting.

Yeah. If you hear a large highpitched squealing it might be that there is no power on the video card. If it doesn't turn off.. thats kind of weird.

The best thing to do would be to take a step back, find the instruction manual and set up the case and power 100% correctly, like matriculates attention to detail. Also make sure your connections are tightly connection and that there are no bent pins on things.

my video cardi only saw one power slot on the the right of the card

there not beeping sound when it turns on.im gonna double check tomarrow better,thanks guys

I agree with Taksbot, you should double check to make sure you didn't forget any connections.

also, try hooking the monitor up to another computer to see if that might be the problem.

Do you have the system speaker wired up?


If there is no beep, then there is no post. Pull your RAM and boot. You should get a beep code. Do the same with your video card.


However you're not giving us much information to go on.

i tried 3 different monitors,just to make sure.my brother notice that theirs no power going to the mouse and keyboard,but the fans are getting power.is their anyway to test out if the motherboard is bad?

99.999% of the time this kind of stuff is not the result of bad hardware.
Take out your ram, and your vid card, and reinstall them again making sure they are seated properly. Then reset the cmos on the mother board and try booting again. I've had this kind of stuff happen as a result of something not seating correctly.

Also, make sure that you have the 4 prong power adapter connected to the motherboard as well, and the 3 prong to your video card.

Check the mobo isnt shorting out on one of the brass stand offs that itll probably locate into the case on.

like i said, it should make several beeps upon booting up, with or without video. listen to the sequence of these beeps (ie. long or short beeps) because it will identify the problem. kinda like checking the ECU for codes.. then google it and you'll find out what the problem is. most of the time it's a problem with your RAM (ie. incorrect RAM for your mobo) or videocard.

I built my own computer.. I'm not any computer brain or anything but they aren't that hard to put together.. But from the amount of information, or lack there of, I can't figure out what the problem would be. I would say your best bet would be start from scratch and put it all back together. Possibly the video card isn't completely inserted into the motherboard correctly? Or it doesn't recognize that card yet because you haven't installed the Drives yet. The motherboard should have its own video card tho nothing fancy have you tried using that first to get any power? then if that works install the drivers for the other video card and i think that would work

Do the fans just kind of spool up and then die along with the whole thing? I once had an issue like that, it turns out my power supply wasn't pushing enough juice for the beast. Make sure you've got enough power from the power supply!
