Im not sure if this is in the right section. But since ive got my rims i want to get rid of the rust that i can now see on my brake discs. Wanted to make sure on how to do it. Is it as simple as taking some sandpaper and rubbing it until it comes off? If so how do i polish it back up too?

you buy new ones...
you NEVER polish a rotor. you could use some sand paper but only on the outer edge. |

I cant really find a picture but the part i want to sandpaper the rust off the where the studs come out of the circular barrel object (if that makes any sense) and also the rotor edge along the tip at the end. If i dont make any sense ill take some pictures in the morning about the areas i want the get rid of the rust

I'm guessing you are talking about the rotor, the rotor is the circle, and the thing clipped on to the side is the caliper where you put your brake pads in. but yeah just drive more, I find If I leave my car for a few days (rarely) there will be rust on the rotor, drive more and do some harder braking, should go away.

Reason why you are getting that is because your rotors are more exposed to air as you can tell, your finger and hands can touch everything in between the spokes, this exposes this to the elements faster. Fix - just drive it, itll disappear after a few stops. True fix? There is none, climate and your new rims will be something you have to get used to. Don't worry about it, thats how it is.

If i dont make any sense ill take some pictures in the morning about the areas i want the get rid of the rust ok i know what you are trying to do. you can sand this barrel section down till you see no more rust. when you are done sanding clean off the rotor with soap and water let dry. TAPE OFF the brake surface and spray the BARREL ONLKY with HIGH TEMP duplicolor engine block paint (preferably do flat black) http://www.duplicolor.com/products/engine.html is the type you want to use. Painting the hub is commonly done.

why not just buy aftermarket brake pads and discs? the OEM discs are gonna rust no matter what. or at least, it will be hard to keep it from rusting.

There is clear high-temp paint available. With care, I suppose you could also paint the rotor edges where the pads don't keep the surface clean.

Dude my aftermarket rotors rusted really fast in this weather... its my own fault for not getting them treated first, but I don't think theres a difference between aftermarket or OEM, they're all going to rust. no? -------------------- |

My aftermarket rotors also rusted at the hub, probably within a week of having them. It's just what they do I think. I didn't get cheap or junky rotors either, they're quality stuff. I actually literally like 2 days ago bought high temp silver to spray over the center hub, which I will be doing next weekend. I chose silver so it would be subtle, but if it's not, at least it'll match my silver car
For those of you with Brembo rotors, did yours rust around the hub too? This post has been edited by GriffGirl: Feb 3, 2009 - 3:17 PM -------------------- |

I was going to pre-treat them prior to install, but I was so damn giddy to get them installed and see what they looked like that I never did... -------------------- |

You can sand them down all you want, within a week or 2 they'll just look the same again. Without painting them that's just what they'll look like.
