thanks for the info Doc
on the 96 ECU the 3rd plug is a 2 pin. here is a pic of the 1996 ECU now the next question I have is this...let's say I decide not to use the 96 ECU and use the 1997 A/T ECU in there until I get a 97 M/T ECU (about 2 weeks), we complete the tranny swap, then will the car still start/be drivable ? will there just be a CEL and the OD button blink ? you dig ? -------------------- |

QUOTE(Dr_Tweak @ Aug 3, 2006 - 10:12 AM) Also I think the rear mount bracket is different, make sure that you have the one for the manual tranny. -Doc the auto rear mount fits fine, just has an extra hook for the auto shifter cable that will no longer be used. QUOTE(Batman722 @ Aug 3, 2006 - 11:46 AM) now the next question I have is this...let's say I decide not to use the 96 ECU and use the 1997 A/T ECU in there until I get a 97 M/T ECU (about 2 weeks), we complete the tranny swap, then will the car still start/be drivable ? will there just be a CEL and the OD button blink ? you dig ? we used the 96 ECU and everything works fine. no warning lights, blinking lights, CEL. car starts, drives, runs better than ever I did a good amount of research on this project and people still were not sure of some things and couldn't answer some of my questions and I was missing some parts when the time came to do it, so I thought I'd post a more comprehensive list of the parts we used for my swap. This is in my 97 ST Manual transmission (mine is a from a 95 ST) Manual ECU (if you have OBDII get an OBDII ECU) Shifter cables Clutch slave cylinder (was attached to my tranny) Clutch master cylinder (mine came from a junkyard with hard-line attached) Clutch hard-line (from master cylinder) Clitch rubber line (from the hard-line to slave cylinder) Clutch pedal assembly (w/ bracket & bolts) Brake pedal (bracket and bolts not necessary) Motor mount (drivers side is the only one necessary, difference is in the bracket) Flywheel (w/ 6 bolts) Clutch (new) Pressure plate (new) Throwout bearing (new) Fork (came in the tranny) Shifter assembly (I got the TRD which came with a knob) Shift boot (bought new OEM from dealer, about $25) Manual shifter surround (auto shifter surround does not have the clips to hold the shift boot) 4 C clips (for shifter cables and rubber clutch line, about $0.95 each from the dealer) Transmission fluid (Synchromesh) Brake fluid (for clutch cylinder) 1-1/4" holesaw (makes it easier to drill the hole in the firewall for the master cylinder) if anyone wants pictures or has any questions you can ask me, Manny (presure2), or Dustin (Batman722) This post has been edited by hurley97: Oct 5, 2006 - 6:02 PM -------------------- |

Its not a hard job to do at all by yourself. But I am sure you would look at roughly $2,000 said and done with parts and labor. -------------------- |

Since completing my conversion I would like to post a more complete and updated listing of what is needed.
Auto to Manual Trans Checklist Manual Transmission Transmission mounts driver side, and rear, might as well change to front manual tranny mount too since they are stronger than auto mount and since auto front mounts break faster when used in manual celicas. Clutch hard lines (custom) or oem donor Clutch Slave Cylinder Clutch Master Cylinder Shifter Cable C-Clips 4 Total Needed (2 on tranny side and 2 on shifter side) Shifter Cables Shifter Assembly Brake Pedal Assembly (Or you can cut your auto ones) Clutch Pedal Assembly Manual Shifter Trim Surround Shift Boot Shift Knob Flywheel and manual flywheel Bolts Clutch Pressure Plate Pressure plate bolts Throwout bearing Starter (Reuse) Manual Transmission Bolts Bell Housing (Reuse) Auto Axles (Reuse) Starter (Reuse) NEW CVBoots - Might as well Manual ECU needed for OBDII Only. If OBDI, you can either get the manual ECU (Expensive), or get the manual cluster, or just remove the auto cluster O/D bulb - reason is because you get the O/D blinking error because your auto ECU is looking for your automatic trans solenoids sensors, which isnt there anymore. Brake Fluid Transmission Oil Don't forget to check if your brake and reverse lights are connected and work. Hope this helps out better. Good Luck to all you swappers. I can usually get everything in that whole list for about $700. -Doc is that including the labor? with everything installed? is 600 cheap for a full swap labor included? there is this mechanic that has a 5th gen celica, when i had a conversation with him he sounded like hes knows what hes talking about but i havent seen any of his work..should i trust this guy to work on my car? another thing is how long does a transmission convertion take? days? weeks?? sorry i know im such a noob and needs to be researching and reading article about this, just wanted to hear you guys's opinion about this... -------------------- |

600 sounds unbelievable for parts and labor that is not even enough for parts especially you would need to get some stuff brand new plus labor. Its possible to get in done in a day with the right tools, full morning through night and friends that know what they are doing.

i see, well i still havent decided if i should trust the guy, but i have been saving up just in case i want to follow through with the conversion, another thing im hesitating about is that i dont want to go throught with this mechanic and have trouble along the way quoting me for 600 and adding more money to the bill later after the swap, so i guess best thing to do is acquire all the parts myself and just pay for the labor, he said hell charge me 300 for the labor and another 300 plus tax on parts, so im guessing it will be more than 600 including tax...

Good job, make sure everything on my list is still on the donor car, you might want to still get some things new like throwoutbearing, clutch master cyl, slave cyl, clutch cables, clutch, etc. Most things on the list are recommended to buy new only the more hard to find parts like the tranny, pedals, maybe bolts, etc. are the ones you need to buy used. Do you plan to just reuse all the used parts? You'd be more satisfied and less headaches later to get some of the stuff new now.

so do you guys think 1,500-2k would cover the cost of parts and labor for the swap?
and if i were to do the swap myself i guess id only have to pay about $700 for parts? |
