for the smoke, your valve seals are bad. Not easy to change out.
That link is just a muffler. You would need to cut your old muffler off and have that one welded on in it's place. -------------------- |

Is there something i can get that is a bolt on and doesent require welding? that would be a negative your going to have to take the exhaust that you buy up to a local muffler shop and they will weld it on for you it normally is pretty cheap just to hack off your old tip and install a new one they did mine for $30 i believe. |

Depending on the thickness and smell of the smoke (which are hard to explain in words), it could also be carbon buildup on the valves or just condensation from the converter both of which are pretty normal conditions. If it's valve seals you will notice a little bit of oil consumption along with it. Just know that using 1qt of oil every 1200-3000 miles is considered acceptable by Toyota's standards, anything more than that is cause for concern.

Is there something i can get that is a bolt on and doesent require welding? You'll spend more money getting a bolt-on VS just having someone weld one for you. -------------------- |

couldn't determine how serious the problem is...
I'm pretty sure i've got bad valve seals because I get the start-up smoke and dont' have a bad idle, although its a little high. Are bad valve seals just something to live with i.e. topping off oil or is it something that should be replaced sooner than later? I plan to replace them on my next TB/WP but should I do it sooner? |

I just put my celica in the garage to get new valve seals as well as a build. I had blue smoke at start up for about 10 seconds. The guy gave me a call and said it was in fact the seals. It's pretty expensive and if I wasn't doing a build on it, I wouldn't have bothered because i was only loosing about a teaspoon of oil a week. |

ok I just wanted to confirm that the only thing it causes is oil consumption and obviously not optimum performance, and my engine isn't in danger short or long-term.

I don't think so...I would drive it casually I guess, I wouldn't go rompin on it or anything. You never know if you could totally blow out those seals? I heard something about the seals get real hard and then can break causing more issues.

I've had the blast of white exhaust smoke for a couple of years now. I'll live with it and continue to change the oil every 5000 miles.
