SEATTLE -- State troopers said they want to put the brakes on an alarming trend gaining speed -- racing on Interstate 5.

"There are about five cars on the freeway and they're speeding, and they're about to cause an accident," one caller said. "They were going too fast. They were weaving in and out of traffic, and they went by us like a bat out of hell."

Troopers said there were six cars in all. A traffic jam at a construction site on I-5 helped troopers catch up with three of the drivers, all in Mustangs.

"The 911 calls, the Department of Transportation workers directed troopers in," said Sgt. Dan Atchison.

In this case, the troopers caught a lucky break. But they say there are dozens more speed racers they've yet to catch who tear down local roads.

Every weekend, troopers said, Highway 167 turns into the Grand Prix as a car club of custom-modified Hondas race through Kent and Auburn. By the time troopers get the calls, they said, the cars are often long-gone.

"Other times you're in a position you have to back off of them, because they are so dangerous," said Atchison.

Troopers said the three drivers caught on Sunday - 18-year-old Benjamin Barclay, 21-year-old David Hampton and 21-year-old Jacob Williams - are members of a car club called "Rogue Squadron." All three are from the Bellingham area.

stupid kids gana get someone killed, wft though is freeway racing getting that popular? they need to find a way to crack down on it more.

On I-5?...The street racing is dumb to begin with, but on an interstate where it is pretty much guaranteed you'll get caught..?

That's just plain idiotic.

Hmm..I know that the 91 freeway over here in Socal gets mad racing..I am sick of people pullin up next to me trying to race..some guy in a Chevy Colorado was trying to get to race for about 3 miles one night.

The worse wasn't cars, but bikes that like to race as well. One day on my way to work 4 bikes, a G35, Mustang, Civic, and Accord were on the freeway slowing down all the lanes while the guys on bikes did tricks. I mean, 50-60 on the freeway doing bike tricks? It lasted forever and no cops were on the freeway.

Stupid kids. Pissing me the hell off.

thats not suprising a lot of ppl up here drive like asses on the freeway. the worst drivers are the one that sell their celica and get impreza lol jk. I see it everyday but almost everybody drives like that ive been past/cut off forced off the road by many cars even semis and half the time it in my big ass work van. like how cant you see this big white van. its funny Ive heard of that "team" lol their a bunch of up tight @ssholes that think they got the best car out there. just last weekend i almost hit a dang bookcase on I5. I avoided it but my friend didnt she clipped it wit her prelude.

I told him off and left. wtf though tie your **** down and at least go back and get it, they where not busted up or anything. total jack a**

Wasn't "highway racing" recently "featured" in the newest Need For Speed?...Undercover? I believe it was...maybe it'll take one or two of them getting killed before they realize that there's a time and place.
