I bought the car at 80,000 miles, upon entering 170,000 miles it did intrigue me that the timing belt has not snapped, although it did make a chirping sound. On further inspections, at accelerations the crank pulley would wobble as well. Hoping that the timing belt "WAS" replaced at 80,000 when I bought it, it still had the original toyota logo on the belt with a lot of small cracks when we dugged it up.

BCCentaur, Muggs, and I did my cv axle joint, timing belt, water pump, and misc. gasket replacements. All was good until we hit the crank pulley. As soon as the crank pulley came out the crankshaft guide was missing, possibly the reason why my crankshaft pulley was wobbling. Upon further inspections, as the crankshaft timing gear did not "easily" slipped off like it said in the Haynes book we had to force our way to get it off, not the best job in the world due to cast iron block that will easily dent.

Pics of the Crankshaft Timing Gear after removal

Notice how we stripped the outer edge of the backing on the gear.

The seal behind the crankshaft timing gear.

-------------------------------------

Reason why timing will be off if you don't have this. It's a metal peice shaped of a cresent that sits on the crankshaft rod. Mine was destroyed after years of heavy footing causing the crank pulley to shake. Soon the leftover metals welded themselves into the timing gear and crankshaft rod causing it almost impossible to slide off the timing gear.

-------------------------------------

During the prying of the timing gear we eventually destroyed the dowel pin that sits on the crankcase to hold the belt tensioner.

Now waiting on the parts from Toyota.
