I want to do a auto to manual conversion for my 2.2 1994 GT hatchback, but do I need to find a manual tranny from the 6th gen and/or year or can I use, say, a 2000 celica transmission?

no, the 7th gen tranny is diffrent.

i would also stay away from older 5th gen trannys (90-93 celica) they tend to have bad syncros.
any 94-99 celica gt tranny will work.
