tires are tires unless you need something specific.

ok well I think i'm going to go with kumho ecsta ast 225/50/16. Anyone have any experience or opinions on these? they are rated at 400, but I'm thinking I don't have the power to need a softer tire like a 2-300. They're 75.00 each so the price is right

I had Ecstas on my car when I bought it and absolutely HATED them. They're fine on dry pavement, which for you in Cali is good, but on anything else, like rain, they really SUCK. They also won't last you very long at all. Plan on replacing them in about a year.

America's Tires/Discount Tires will price match tirerack.com's prices before shipping. If you can find something good on Tirerack, which usually has pretty good prices, and hit America's Tires/Discount Tires (whatever it's called down by you - here it's America's Tires) when they're having a sale or coupon type of deal, you can get a great deal on tires. I put 225/45/17 Yokohama S Drive's on my car for just over $400 out the door which is a GREAT deal. I've been REALLY happy with them, too.

oh wow, i was worried about them being too durable with a 400 rating. I checked out the reviews on those yoko's and they look like a great deal. Thanks for the advice!

Sure, good luck with 'em! If you get them lemme know how you like them. When I went in to have my tires rotated the guy working asked me how I liked them and told me his buddy has them on his car and is totally loving them too.
