By bf recently got a firebird and hes almost done fixing it, except for what happenend the other day. He took it down the road for a test drive, and at first it drove perfectly and then died. and would not start. he has changed out coil packs, and tried switching out the coil pairs and that didn't work. He said the engine will try to start, and he checked to see if the spark plugs were firing, which they are. Do you guys have an idea of what it could be thats going wrong?

Any help would be appreciated.

Its a 1996 firebird with a 3800 series V6. when you turn the key, it will make the noise of trying to crank and thats all it does. the gas is not bad because we checked it and its fine.

whats his fuel pressure?

probably not related to the no-start, but has he done the lower intake manifold gasket job yet? if no then he needs to get that done ASAP before he trashes the engine.

Crank angle sensor? Not sure if those things even come with one, unless its the old Distributor cap and style. My previous boss had to take off his waterpump just to get to the distributor. Sucks to have a Domestic car. Its even worse when you know you gotta take off your v8 intake manifold to get to your starter. That's a caddy for u!

My wife has the same car (98). She had a really big problem with vapor lock. She would be driving down the road and the car would just die. Sounds like it could be the same thing.

vapor lock on a fuel injected engine? laugh.gif vapor lock is when fuel in the fuel line turns to vapor and cuts liquid fuel flow to the carb, carb work on vapors.

in a fuel injected setup like those cars the fuel is constantly circulating in a loop to the engine and back to the tank, always have fresh cool fuel at the rail and moving through the rail, to vapor lock you'd need to slow the flow of fuel dramatically. sounds more like a bad fuel pump thats heating up and dieing out after use for a while, its a common way for them to fail.

or she's runing the fuel tank so low that its sucking fumes tongue.gif
