Decal Glue removal? Options

Hello all, I've googled my brain out to find a way to remove the decal glue, but it seems there is a million ways, but non say are 100% sure of safety to the exsisting paint/coat. I removed the vinyl part via heat gun, some of the decal was so old it just fell off, some peeled.

So I ask you experienced ladies and gentlemen, how in the heck do you remove that damn glue, without hurting the exsisting paint.

I went to a local store and they suggested rubbing compound, which worked wonders on the oxidation, didn't even touch the decal glue, even after 10 mins of rubbing it like crazy, nothing changed. Since everyone here is more then familiar with the paint jobs on our celi's i figured someone might have a good idea. Thank you in advance!

cooking oil and a damp cloth, or goo gone



Cooking oil works better for me, specially is all you have left is the glue itself and not pieces of the sticker

dont forget to wash the car after you are done, you don't want the oil to get cooked on the sun lol, it won't damage the paint, but it'll look fugly and will smell lol

now are you talking about like a 6gc.net sticker or the toyota thing on the front of the car?

Alrighty, cooking oil failed...horribly. Took off the wax, but left the decal glue untouched. No worries though, needed another coat anyway after the rubbing compound. I rubbed in with a medium tuffness cloth for 10 mins, no change.

The decal i'm talking about, is with my ST is came with these small red double lines from back to front. When purchased some pieces were gone, and others were flaking off. So i decided to take the whole thing off. Vinyl was no issue, but this concrete glue they used is immortal. It looks a whole lot better without the red flaking, but I want the resin glue off aswell, trying to acquire a clean look with this oldie.

This glue has been sunbaked for 15 years. I tried rubbing compound, but was informed the only way that might work is with a buffer. There has to be a simplier solution to taking off old glue. Going to try Goo Gone tomorrow, hopefully it won't damage the clearcoat...gunna try inside the hatchback close down first to see what it does. Keep the ideas coming, i'm willing to be a test subject!

3M Adhesive Remover. Trust me, I took pinstripes off of my car with it. PERFECTLY SAFE on your paint provided you are using a soft cloth. After it's all off, claybar to get any stubborn residual pieces of adhesive off.

I spoke to soon. The cooking oil worked, i just didn't leave it on there long enough. The small spot i did last night, i scratched this morning with a fingernail and it came right off. Good stuff, thank you!

I think Goo Gone would've been safe for the paint, too. It's an oil as well.

Cooking oil as in like regular corn oil? Crazy [how the hell do people figure this stuff out?]

Yea I used regular corn oil, dunno about that adhesive, might need some goo gone for that.

The oil is just putting some moisture in the old glue and allowing me to pick it off.

Chemistry is your friend there

as he said above, oil moisturise the adhesive pigments and doesn't evaporate like alcohol based solvents, if you lieave it on, it'll work for silicone as well, just make sure the actual sticker is off, as the oil would have a hard time getting through the sticker ( it'll work anyways just take a longer time to break through )

Alrighty, they are finally off! It took four hours, soaked them in 3M Adhesive remover. Got a palm sander, put a medium tuffness rag on it, and spread some rubbing compound. Finally gone!

Yes yes, I planned on some pics, but I ran out of daylight last night and still have some residue and couple swirl marks I have to buff out. I'll shine'er up after work, post some this afternoon.

When they do get up, please excuse the horrible stock steel rims. Have some stock toyota caps coming, until i break bank and get some real rims.

I ment to make'er shine, but damn you can barely see'er with the reflections! Plus my camera is crapola. That about finishes the outside work i wanted to do, besides finding a way to fix the ugly window moulding, and rims of course.
