I've got the 8 speaker sound system in my Celica, with the premium headunit.

The tape player will occasionally click when I'm listening to my iPhone, which is really annoying.(It's very loud.)

Is there a fix? Something I can do?

I refuse to buy another headunit(unless it's another OEM one identical to what I have(and if you want to sell yours, PM me, I want a spare)) because I don't want a disco ball in my cockpit.

Thanks!

Define clicking?

Are you using a tape-deck adapter? One that goes into your tape-deck with a wire that comes out of the front and runs to your iPhone's 1/8" Jack? If so... I feel as if you're talking about the tape-deck's mechanical noise. You'll also hear some god-awful tape-hiss from that through the speakers.

There's nothing you can do unless you want to modify your stock CD-Player (if you have one) and add in a 1/8" AUX-In (like me, removes all CD-Player functionality unless you design a switching circuit to switch from the AUX/CD Input) or get a new head-unit. Take your pick.

2Hz loud mechanical clicking coming from the deck. I use a 1/8 to Tape adapter.

It only clicks sometimes.

Unfortunately, everything's integrated, so I guess I could go sniffing traces on the radio...

As long as that tape is in the deck, it will click. I've never seen a tape-deck that doesn't make that sound.

What do you mean "everything's integrated?" There's no built-in AUX-In in the stock head-unit, you'll need to tap into the amplifier's line-in by sniffing traces. However, you'd have to use the radio's input, not the tape-deck's. If you tap into the tape-deck's output to the amp, then you'll still get clicking, just no tape-hiss. Either way, you'll render whatever you tap into useless unless you build yourself a switching circuit.

Ah, you not going to want to hear this, but here goes: I also have the premium sound w/cassette and this is what I found: the drive gears develop cracks, see pic below, probably due to heat/cold cycles. The areas outlined in hot pink are where they are on mine, as you can see I tried re-shaping the gears and gluing them a bit but it only helped when playing in one direction.

I spent a couple hours trying to find info on the net for Fujitsu parts but didn't have much luck. As a side note the Mrs's Camry (2000 LE) makes the same noise on her cassette, so I expect it is the same unit.

When I figur' out how to post an image w/o using p'bucket you'll see what
I mean.

I'd replace it if I could but no work no money (michigan) 'sides I already took it apart and saw where the gears split/cracked. Totally p/p design, molding nylon around a metal disc. I don't think they ever thought about thermal expanxion contraction effects, (amazing because the Fujitsu Ten units in my older Toyota's '90 ST and '77 GT were -bulletproof.)

Ah, maybe th pic will come thru now:

The pink circled areas are the cracks, notice the shine from my attempt at using super glue to reconnect the halves of the gears (helped), also note the re-shaping of the gears with a swiss file (which did'nt work due to gears being nylon or delrin), ended up using an x-acto knife which did help (barely audible) in one direction only. Anybody know where to get Fujitsu Ten parts?
