I'm going to dyno my car this weekend and I was wondering what gear is best to use for the 3 pulls. I read somewhere that the best one to use is the one closest to 1:1 ratio. In my case, this appears to be 5th gear (see below). This was the only information I was able to find so I wanted to get confirmation from one of you guys here. I just want to make sure I get my money's worth and don't waste a pull on a gear that won't put out as much power. I could be skeptical because 5th gear seems kinda high when other cars I've seen are usually 3th or 4th gear pulls. Then again, those only had 4 or 5-speeds. This one has 7. Yes, my car is automatic... lol.

1st: 4.924
2nd: 3.194
3rd: 2.043
4th: 1.412
5th: 1.000
6th: 0.862
7th: 0.771
Reverse: 3.972
Final drive ratio: 3.357

its not a dual clutch, but the auto is faster than the manual. paddle shifts are quick at 500 milliseconds (not as fast as 200 in a GTR, but faster than anyone can shift a manual). i had the manual and auto for a day each and i enjoyed the auto more. granted, i didn't grow up driving manuals so im not as passionate about a lot of the guys on the forums. many refuse to believe that, with the new technology, autos are becoming better than manuals (those people say dual-clutches are manual - to me, if it doesnt have a clutch pedal, its auto). i love manuals, but not every day. maybe when im older and have a "weekend" car, it'll be manual. for now, this thing is perfect - manual when i want to have fun and auto when im feeling lazy. smile.gif

It's your choice man...personally, I love my car and don't hate the transmission, but if I could have the exact same car with a manual I'd take it in a heartbeat. My next car will definitely be stick.

Having said that, some auto transmissions are pretty good, like the one in the current MX-5.

i felt the same way with my celica and tc. i thought the Z would be my first stick shift car because of the huge difference in power from the auto/manual celica and tc. it was almost the opposite. im glad i had the chance to drive them both.

IN the real world, it doesn't matter what car you have, can afford, etc.... If it isn't manual, it isn't serious. Then again, we do live in a new age. I felt the same way about djing. If it wasn't vinyl, it was whack, but people try to convince me otherwise. Not really any skill in autos, which is another important matter. Imagine having a car you tune to drive on it's own. And then people competed in who can tune the vehicle to run on auto pilot better? It's silly, right? You can only take pride in what you can do with your body, which to me, means "Sport".

But OP, if you like it like that, then that's all that matters.

if i had another celica, it would definitely be a manual. i didn't know the GTR and supercars that only come automatic weren't serious cars. same with f1 cars, those are a joke. everyone has their opinions on what's more fun and whatnot. i was happy to drop an extra grand or two on my UPgrade. nothin like popping it in D when miami traffic kicks in.

It's only more expensive because its an automatic - doesn't necessarily make it an "upgrade.'

Personally I'd rather have a Ferrari in 6spd but nowadays they are paddle shift. That's disappointing to me, but it makes them faster.

Anyways - if you wanted to do a 5th gear pull - how would you even stop at 5? Is it like a manu-matic?

everyones different. im over the modding thing so i bought a fast car with big brakes, 19's, nice tires, lsd, spoilers, etc so i dont have to touch it. its my daily driver and i dont care for the stick shift thing.

yea, it's manumatic with paddles. it can be shifted at the shifter too. i'll probably post up dynos and videos if anyone cares. ive never had the 6gc community throw haterade on me in 6 years so im a little hesitant now. lol. i still love you guys.

How are we hating? If you like it, then that's on you and it's cool. But if you post a thread, don't expect anyone to NOT post what they feel about it or what they think, cuz you wanted to share what you felt or thought about it.

I think you've got a really REALLY nice car and personally, I'd LOVE to see the dynos when you get 'em.

As for automatic/manual, w/e, you're totally right. Nowadays technology has advanced so much that there are LOTS of cars where an auto tranny is more efficient and lends to more power than a manual. We're not talking about the old automatic transmissions of the 70s or even 80s here. They've come a LOOOONG way.

Take the Supra for example. There's a reason the MKIV turbos only came with automatic.

mkiv supra's came 6 speed speed as well....
