Engine Questions, Recently swapped engine Options

Well the topic says what this is about. Recently i had a forced engine swap due to the fact that the original engine of my celica was totaled. I bought a 7a-fe Engine from a Special edition celica. Year 96 to be precise, the engine had 158k miles but that's the best i could get on my budget. Even though the mileage is on the high side the engine runs very smoothly to my very surprised. Now the reason of this post is. The engine swap was successful and the car runs great but to my concern the engine wont get me past 100 miles per hour. Not that i am looking to be hitting the 140 but i am just curious as to why the engine won't give me more power. I currently own a cold air intake so should give around 5 to 10 more horse power yet, the car won't give more

P.S: my previous engine before the incident topped 115 miles per hours Stock

Well with 158k the first thing I'd do is check compression for that problem and you can inspect the plugs while you are at it. Low compression will limit peak Hp, but it could be a slightly plugged fuel filter, worn valves or restricted cat as well(sometimes when an engine grenades the cat will be damaged).

On a side note with the gearing our cars have, I'd be hesitant to sustain speeds over 95 for too long, running close to 5k rpm for long periods is bad for high milage engines.

Yeah the 7AFE really isn't meant for 100+mph. The gearing is just too short to get there. I mean, of course it can be done....eventually, but I wouldn't feel comfortable with it.

And Toyota motors aren't like Honda motors. When you slap an intake on a Civic you'll get 5-10hp increase, but you'll get 0-1hp increase on a Toyota. If you did intake, exhaust, and header you might be lucky and get 5hp from it.


What is happening when you try to get up to 100? Does the motor cut? Does it just not get there? Does your speed even out while the RPMs climb?

I wouldn't be suprised if this thread gets closed though.

NO the engine doesn't clip at all it reaches 100mph like any car would, but once it gets there the engine wont give it enough power to go past 100mph if i go downhill yes it will go past but once i go back to a flat road the car will slow down back to 100mph. Second, yes i am aware that 7a-fe aren't top side highspeed engines but since i was puzzled at the fact that my old engine would peak 115mph around 100kish miles and to be honest the previous owner left the car to rot and this new engine which inspected myself and a professional mechanic looked very well maintained although the mileage is past 150k. Very important im not trying to make the car any faster im just puzzled at the fact that the engine won't crank the power i believed it would

I used to have a '94 ST and would do the same thing at 100mph. I just figured it didn't have enough juice to go past 100 and it wouldn't even be redlined.

its wear and tear buddy. Once you get past 100k mile, no matter what oil or maintenance you do the engine will be worn out of the specifications. Your intake and exhaust valves as well as your the pistion rings will not seal compared to a new engine. The results is you will not get as much power and have more blow by.

do a leak down test and you will see how much air escapes each pistion. With our little 4 cylinders every little bit hurts performance.

if you want more power get your tired engien rebuild and cams reground and it will make a dramatic difference.
