Anyone know how much horsepower is in the 3SGE 1990 model? Is it from a MR2. The only reason why I'm asking is becasue I have a good deal for it right now and I wanted to know what kind of engine it is. I assume it is a MR2 non turbo anyone can clearify this for me that would be great.

That is a 2nd gen 3sge.
hp over 150 maybe up to 180hp Go for it if possible. If not, get the 3rd gen 3sge -------------------- West_Minist

Well I guess if the 3SGE 1990 MR2 Engine is only 150 HP there is no point since a GTS (Canadian model) is already at 140 HP. So which 3SGE model is better to get. Only reason why I don't want the 3SGTE is because it needs more work since it has a turbo and the transmission I think needs to be modified as well where as the 3SGE engine is easier and cheaper for labour and parts.
Anyone has a 3SGE or 3SGTE engine in their Celica at this point? |

If you're truly intent on getting a 3S-GE, you could get the one out of the sixth generation Celica(The GT in Europe I think, and the SS-II and SS-III in Japan.) It has 177 horsepower from '94-'97. If you can find one, the best 3S-GE to get would be the BEAMS 3S-GE from a 1998 Toyota Celica, because it has twenty more horsepower, ten more lb. ft. of torque, and has VVT-i. I'd imagine that a BEAMS 3S-GE engine would be almost impossible to find(Harder than finding a Black Top 20 valve 4A-GE) and if you find one, it's probably going to be very expensive. -------------------- New Toyota project coming soon...

By the way, the BEAMS 3S-GE engine can be identified because it has a red valve cover and a red intake manifold. Here's a photo of what it looks like:

Okay believe it or not but I just called a Japanese used part shop and they told me that they have a 1998 3S-GE engine DOHC VVT-I in stock. However they told me that they ripped it out of a 1998 Celica GT. Also the manifold is not red but is silver? Does that make any sense?
I find it weird since in your information chart it shows North America Engines to be either the 5SFE or the 7A-FE. I'm getting so confused but I don't want to get scammed when I do the convertion. |

I swapped my 5s-fe for a 3s-gte recently and you can use the stock transmission if you get a 2nd gen 3s-gte, no problem, but If you buy a 3s-gte, buy a clip with a tranny- I mean if you buy the whole clip you won't have to source as many parts and in the long run could end up costing you less money. Also since the clip comes with a tranny(or atleast mine did) it would be worth it to swap that in soon. However with the 3s-gte I would recommend new axles. I just went custom. --------------------

for parts total was around 5500-5600 when I'm home I'll look through my receipts to give you a more accurate number.
to have the axles made took up only about $200 of that, cause I got the hook up at a local shop, and $600 for shipping, the labor was around probably 1k, for the axles and swap(including the ecu wiring) but that is a 3rd gen, second gen could be had a lot cheaper. I get the car back tomorrow or friday- at the latest monday. its been out for a few weeks.(driving my grandma's lumina has been a blast) I already have a few goodies on it(bov boost controller) I'll post pics when she comes home --------------------

second gen jdm puts out 225(the domestic puts out 200). but good luck finding a domestic-believe me I've tried. and the third gen puts out about 255, I'm hoping for around 275-280 when I'm done.
