Ok
Problem: I have a 94 ST Coupe 5 Speed. 222735 miles Orig problem: Overheated, cylinders filled with coolant. Cause; Headgasket? Thermostat? Needs: Front end wobbling fixed, cleaned, head gasket, windshield, paint job, rear brakes, spoiler reattached, trunk lid fixed. How much would that cost? Benifits: None, have to get rid of it.. If I could keep it then it'd be easier to fix imo and cheaper, and it has a new clutch (5k miles ago) For more OLD info and pics: http://columbus.craigslist.org/cto/1368413976.html Here is Coupe pics: Now, I could trade it for a; 95 ST Hatchback 5 Speed 181k miles Problem: Spun bearing(but needs engine atm?) Needs: Engine installed, cleaned up a bit, ignition(where key goes), interior needs swept, paint job, and i'd do the clutch while I Was at it, and idk what else, maybe random rust fixed? Benifits of 95 ST: Still same isurence, dad likes celicas, its a hatch, sun roof, power windows + locks Thing is, to trade the other guy wants my car running, i HAVE to get rid of my car, my dad is demanding i get rid of it. I could replace the headgasket and trade him, then toss an engine in this car... But idk how much work that will be, because of the condition of the hatchback's engine bay. Here is pics of the hatch: It seems as though someone just kinda unbolted whatever was attatched and left it there. I really dont like how the tranny is just sitting there, but it dont seem damaged at the moment. The engine originally spun a bearing. What would YOU do? Hmm he wants to trade you a car with no engine for a running car? Sounds like he would be making out on the deal to me with the condition of those 2 vehicles in mind and that they are both ST. I know the other one is a hatch and it has power equip but still not a good investment IMO. I'm a bit confused as to why you would do this trade is there some sort of sentimental reason you have to get rid of your car? Would there be some other offset to the deal here like your car has a salvage title and this other one is clean?
As far as getting rid of your car, if you have room to store it then parting it out would net you the most money probably. But it seems like thats not an option, wouldnt you have a problem with trading for a not running car if you have to get rid of this one for similar reasons? I'd try to convince the other guy to do a straight across trade, both not running or nvm. If not then I'd save the car for parts and buy a either a running GT hatch or one ready for a swap, figure out what I could cannibalize from the ST and then part out rest or sell to yard. I got mine for 2400 they are cheap these days. |

Thing is, my dad hates my car. I can not keep it. And my car is not currently running, he is gonna pay me $200 to fix it. So then i'd have $700 to fix the silver celica. He is also buying head gasket.

you might not just have a head gasket problem. your car has 200,000 miles. you could have a cracked head too. i think you should factor in all of the pros and cons. did you ever remove a head before? do you know how to do timing? all these things add up if you take it to a shop. if you do it yourself make sure you know what you are doing... sounds like no matter what your gonna be spending money... my opinion is if you like your car fix it up, maybe put a new motor in... that other car seems like just as much work.

Once again, I am not 18, and even after i'm 18, i'll still be on my dads insurence. I have to listen to him.. He is my father, if I had my way i'd fix my car no doubt.. Except, I don't. And my engine is not the original engine. I know that for a fact.

you do get where i am coming from though... right? this stuff is very time consuming... and costly! the rational thing to do would to buy a new engine for your car, if you like it, and your dad approves! fixing your car to trade for one with no motor doesn't make sense? so i would...
1) swap the engine, if you like your celica and have the approval of your dad. 2) sell the shell and find another project. 3) offer up this guy a deal that is more of an even trade... it seems like he would be getting the better deal... just looking out for a fellow 6gcer! -------------------- |

Well, I can not keep my car. No matter what. Even if my car has 22inch rims with spinners and lcd's out the ass because ice cube got ahold of it. I can NOT keep it. I am being paid to fix mine, the silver car has all the engine pieces, it just originally spun a bearing. Why would I buy an engine for my car when it just needs a head gasket? If anything the silver one needs an engine. Right now I want a car, and i feel these may be my only options. I'm sick of this saturn junk.

I'm a little confused as to what's happening... Your car only needs a new head gasket?? And your dad is paying you to fix it?
And the silver car only has a spun bearing but needs the whole motor? You absolutely cannot keep your car. I've figured that much out. So you want to sell it, buy the silver one on the sly, put a new motor in it, show up with it at your house, and call it a day? -------------------- "Employ your time in improving yourself by other men's writings, so that you shall gain easily what others labored hard for." -Socrates. You absolutely cannot keep your car. I've figured that much out. So you want to sell it, buy the silver one on the sly, put a new motor in it, show up with it at your house, and call it a day? You close, very. The guy trading me with the silver car, is gonna pay me $200 to fix my car, and he is supplying head gasket (new). So it's not a even trade. That car will come with the engine, all the pieces that is, though. So I will most likely, if there is no damage, do a rebuild of some sort, within budget, and do the clutch while it's out. I think it's fair, but then again I have to sell my car for dirt and have only like $800 for a new running car(that would most likely be a piece of **** for $800), or sit here and cry lmao... then again i could fix mine and sell it, but i wouldn't get much. My dad wants my car gone. I'll do the trade, get more money to fix the silver car, do w.e it takes to get it running at friends garage, and just show up one day and be like hey dad i got a new car for $1200 i saved! He goes, oo i like, and tada.. Feels like sean of the dead with all these plans lmao -------------------- I still own my celica, but i'm parting it out and junking it.. Or selling as a whole. No offense man, but you're not giving us any options. lol.
You asked what we would do, but there is apparently only one thing to do, and it seems that you have your mind set (for you) because of your dad. Sorry for being blunt. -------------------- ◊◊◊ My F/S Thread! ◊◊◊

If you get the silver car, I have a running 7AFE that you can just have. I don't want to deal with shipping it though, so that's kind of a drawback.

Don't get the hatch, for a few reasons. One, you're just trading one problem for another. Two, it directly goes against what your father is telling you to do. That's the bottom line. Do what your father tells you. If he tells you to sell the car, then sell it. Otherwise, man up and approach your FATHER about trading the car you've got for the silver hatch - although I'm willing to be he'll tell you the same thing I'm telling you; you're just trading one problem for another.
Are you old enough to get a job? If you are, then get one. Start paying for your share of your auto insurance on your father's policy. That way YOU'RE the one paying insurance for a car that doesn't run (if you trade that guy) rather than your father. If you're old enough to have a car and drive it, you're old enough to get a job. Time to step up. And if your parents won't allow you to get a job, for whatever reason, then suck it up and do what you're told. You may not like it now, but trust me, it'll be a LOT better than going against what you've been told and sneaking around with this whole car thing. If you want to earn your father's trust and respect, you're going to have to show him the same trust in his judgment and respect for him as your father as you're hoping to earn. -------------------- |
