A 3SGE might keep up with a 90's WRX, but to say that you buried a STI makes me giggle.

He has a 3SGE, you have a 5SFE. He puts out a bit more power than you.
But realistically, a 2.0 subaru (90's sti, pre 06 wrx, etc.) Is rated at 227-250hp depending on the turbo, which means they're putting down around 180whp in stock form. Joe's 3sge (koreanjoey on Celicatech) dyno'ed at 160ish whp. Based on that, if you stripped your car out you might tip the scales in your favor based on a power/weight ratio. I know my friend's mildly modded B13 SE-R (intake, header, exhaust) was able to keep up with my WRX when it was stock, so kavy, you might be able to keep up if you went from a roll, due to the AWD in the subaru, but from a stop any wrx or sti, stock or modded would piss all over a 3SGE Celica. OP- define "cheap" mods. You can get a set of web cam regrinds. There is a place here in Washington called "Delta Camshaft" that does the same, or you can put nitrous on, but I don't recommend it. For a 5S your best bet for power is to turbo it, or swap in a 3SGTE. Both aren't cheap. Well with 294 cams you're going to NEED some sort of engine management, as well as aftermarket springs, retainers, and hell you might as well replace the valves while you're in there.

Well with 294 cams you're going to NEED some sort of engine management, as well as aftermarket springs, retainers, and hell you might as well replace the valves while you're in there. no no no. 294 is not the duration of the cams. its just a part #. cameron, your best bet at this point is to do this: drive your car, enjoy it. and save your money. advance your timing a few degrees ( i know you PM'd me about that, ill be PMing you here shortly so that we can hook up and i can help you out with that) and thats about it for now. meanwhile, spend money on the rest of the car. any suspension work that needs to be done, ect. that stuff can all be done in stages, is reletively cheap ( much cheaper than swapping or turboing.) and make a huge diffrence on the way the car handles ect. once you save 3-5k, decide if you want a better platform than a celica, and if not, swap it to a 3rd, or 4th gen 3sgte, and do the manual swap at the same time. between you, myself, dustin, and the girls, we could do the whole swap in weekend...wouldnt be the first swap we've done in a weekend..LMAO!! -------------------- Former Team 5SFTE pro member ;)

would a turbo kit on a 5s have more hp than a 3s swap? right now i have an auto tranny 94 gt with a 5s engine and the only mods i have is an SRI right now. i have an evo2 greddy muffler tip but its welded to the stock exhaust system(which i was planning on swapping to a 2.5"piping custom cat instead), the mileage is up to 176,xxx right now so im thinkin of gettin a new 3s swap since getting a new 5s+ turbo kit would be more expensive.. i need some ideas

Go with the 3s. From my experience (for whatever it's worth), stay NA unless you have lots of money to fix and repair problems associated with turbo engines (not that everyone has problems) or you have solid mechanical experience so you can fix everything yourself. I spent roughly $20G's on a turbo car a couple years ago (just the engine and exhaust alone, the car was only $300). $7G of the $20G was just repairing and tuning it over and over again. I have $7500 total into my celica now and that includes the car and it's great!
Currently I have 182K on my block which was tested and had excellent results so I went and rebuilt (rather a shop did) the head and had it ported and polished, threw in a full opened exhaust with header and also a SRI. I am awaiting the infamous webcams at the moment and am hoping for good results when they get installed. I won't take an STI at all but I do have fun on the highway and back roads.
