Leave it to yarik to drop an asteroid sized chunk of "reality" on this topic - although he's got a point.
I think as enthusiasts at heart a lot of us see this new car as Toyota finally returning to a soulful past with - even though all the evidence points to the exact opposite. I don't know if I'm speaking for everyone else but I'm looking to replace my celica with a car about the same size, about the same weight, and with a little more "get up and go" for about what my car sold for that's still manufactured by Toyota. At this point the only things on my radar are the Lexus IS AWD or a Scion tC but the thing I really was/am waiting for is the production 86 but if Toyota wants to ruin what is damn well their last chance with me that's fine - I'll be just a little sadder to have a 370z in the driveway than a 86 but that'll melt away with each drive. The point is that Toyota dragging their feet has cost them dearly; when the time was right to be throwing new sports cars at the market they were completely enthralled with taking over the global market with sheer econobox numbers and now they can't really afford to build the car they should be building because there isn't a market big enough to compensate for the money lost on this project. -------------------- Has no more Celicas

SWEET JESUS!!
please! what the effin duck is wrong with you? there is no SCION FR-S! cant you see its a photoshop from initial FT-86 pics? there is no FT-86 sedan! cant you see its a photoshop from Belgium FT-86 pics? its all stupid rumors and photoshops to attract readers and other site links. Dont blame Toyota and whine according to rumors until you get official info and real pics, not drawings. to bring you something real, see motor shows of REAL TOYOTA representative employees, not some bloggers that found there is a "layer" feature in photoshop software and he could draw another door or something on top of original pic. Here: Toyota FT-86 at Paris Motor Show 2010, it is happening RIGHT NOW in Paris, France, Middle Europe, YO, from 2nd to 17th of October available to PUBLIC. Go and see the car, its that simple! -------------------- 1994 MR2 SW20, 1990 Celica ST185, both 3SGTE

As long as it delivers on the promised FR driveline and comparatively light weight, I couldn't care less what it looks like or if it were badged a Diahatsu SuperFishCakeHappyTime Anal Leakage Special Edition. Quote of the month right there agreed. if the Scion bull**** would come true, it would not mean BAD NEWS. Ok, we all would like to have a awesome sporty RWD car, but if its for 20k USD it will NOT be exclusive and it WILL be cheap ass **** interior. So adding similar parts to SCION it would make easier for track drivers to source new parts. -------------------- 1994 MR2 SW20, 1990 Celica ST185, both 3SGTE

^ As of right now, I'd like to believe you, but I've also scratched off my Toyota tattoo with a blunt razor blade, so I'm still a little pissed. Show me a production FT-86 on the showroom floor exactly as promised and I'll pop a boner, but before that I'm not showing a fawking ounce of enthusiasm for this car anymore.

There are so many different rumors surrounding this vehicle it is hard to keep up, but current talk of the FT being sold as a Scion FR-S (at around $25,000) seems to make the most logical sense, if you think about it. . .
After the recall hysteria surrounding Toyota, is it really all that likely Toyota will try to restore its image by marketing a performance coupe? My bet is Toyota will stay focused on its green image and the Prius "brand". Also, at the moment, Scion is the division that needs new products that will sell and draw excitement, not Toyota. I'm sure Toyota realizes that there likely are quite a few current Scion owners who would want to upgrade into a $25,000 FR-S from that that $19,000 TC they bought in their 20's, if such a car existed. Everybody seems to forget how bad project genesis turned out for Toyota- The Echo, 7th gen Celica, and MR-Spyder were all marketed as youth-oriented vehicles, but struggled to find buyers under the Toyota banner. The next stab at selling products to younger buyers was Scion- which until only recently, has been a fairly positive sucess story for Toyota. -------------------- Car #3: 98 Accord LX- purchased 5/06, totaled 8/06
Car #2: 95 Celica GT- purchased 8/03, current daily driver Car #1: 01 Focus ZX3- purchased 5/01, sold 8/03 |

Whatever the FT-86 will come to market as, it will be a cool little sports car, whether it wears the Celica badge or not.

Rant on appearance: I didn't really read the whole topic, but I feel like I may be one of the few who thinks this car is just... ugly. Anyone? Like a pretty girl who's eyes are just a bit too far apart. And squinting into a bright light. That shows wrinkles. And she has a really small butt... Yuck. Ugh... I don't like it is my point. I never liked the 7g Celica either. I'm down with RWD 4 bangers and all, but when it looks that close to something thats been done by them already... Not making me want it. I also hate Lancers for the same reason. And all Subarus, on the realz.
Everything else: Again, I'm not hating on the drivetrain necessarily just the concept... I think Toyota needs to focus more on something new. Instead of basing a brand new car on the 80's AE86, which my family had and I loved personally, move up to RWD V6... turbo? They could get crazy. I'm actually liking Hyundai's in general better than Toyota, and I was raised on Toyota. Not like Nissan though cause I really think they go overboard on sports cars not even for normal people hardly. Not to mention I got to drive a 350z once and hated every second of it compared to how fun a 300 and a 240 are. Completely redesign the body style. Or bring the new 2011 AWD Supercharged Sienna Mach 5 megasport (rolls of the tongue) to the table. It could be a huge success. INNOVATION is what I'm seeking. I'm not sayin I expect them to bring back the Supra but it's almost 2011. I thought we were supposed to be flying in like... 4 years. Or maybe I just let Michael J. Fox mislead me in my youthful ignorance. As a relatively inexpensive sport coupe this is pretty much what I expect from Toyota, true to their caliber. I would love to see Toyota move back up a step and set a LEGIT precedent for reasonable modern sports coupes instead of doing mild tweaks on ones that exist or continuing to use Scion (TC is the worst car since Fierro) as a base. But maybe I'm just a pushy proggressionist. Unless any of that's a supposed option, idk. I tried to research this but didn't get very far so I'm kinda talkin out of my ass. I'm stressin on Christmas. But anyways... This post has been edited by nwizzle: Dec 26, 2010 - 11:24 PM |

I sure hope im not the only one that thinks how incredibly tragic it is that toyota is going with a subaru engine (I didnt read through every page of this thread), is toyota no longer capable or is there some specific reasoning behind this?

well its just a matter of time for sports cars to switch to boxer engines. the lower center of gravity pays its dividends! And as far as the rumors go the boxer engine could be quite modified by Toyota, maybe even Yamaha

Not just tuned by Yamaha, but built by Yamaha.

Not just tuned by Yamaha, but built by Yamaha. I dunno about the rest of the motor, but I know a lot of the heads are built by Yamaha. 2JZ, 3S, 1LR (LF-A), all built by Yamaha. That's why they sound like a symphony This post has been edited by HectortheRican: Dec 29, 2010 - 12:20 PM -------------------- taking too long to mod since '09

Don't forget all of the S block engines, 1ZZ and 2ZZ, and I'm fairly confident that all of the A series engines were manufactured by Yamaha as well. I'm just too lazy to go check right now.
