I stand pretty firm by my statement. Every rumor is based on some truth. Crafty journalists (especially in automotive world) get paid hefty sums of money by magazines who want to print/publish sneak previews or first ever photos before any one else does. Some photos sell for as high as 100,000 per. While journalists can make mistakes.. when stakes are so high they do their work very thoroughly.

I cant seem to find schedule for the auto show but I will wait patiently and then unleash a wave of pessimismismismismism

Hmm...not sure if I like this more than the original, although the rear seems more composed! The direction of styling is definitely spot-on though, it's good to see some aggressiveness with a Toyota badge once again.

The fusion of the 7th gen's high-arc flared rear with the 6th gen's overall body styling in an updated design language.

So, why isn't this being called a Celica? wink.gif

I'm not so fond of the lower front grille or the ridiculous Pontiac Grand Am spoiler but everything else is damn spot on.

I'd like it in red please...or Subaru blue. biggrin.gif

I was going to type out my usual 20 paragraph wall of text but considering that there are pages of rants on ft86club.com forums I am just going to say this.

7th generation celica that has been retrofitted with mazda front bumper from newer mazda models, mazda rx7 rear bumper from older model, mercedes side vents and a scion spoiler. Now I know what you all think... this car looks baaaaaad aaaaaaaasssss.. and maybe it does but not in black color and not with that rear bumper and not with those audi running lights.

On the other hand this car has some good qualities to it. I hope that in the next couple of weeks we will find out a little more information on this vehicle.

As of now there are all kinds of bells ringing about this vehicle being marketed in europe first and as scion in usa second...

Yarik - don't get your panties in a bunch over the design/styling. It's a concept. The idea of a concept is to give a (typically) over-dramatic look to say "look what we could do", when historically Toyota's actual production units look much more.... plain.

And here lies the root of the problem.

Toyota has had this design on the drawing board effectively since 2001 ish. That is over 10 years of conceptualizing. They also had nearly 3 years to get their stuff together. Now all this time later they are nowhere near being able to produce this car any time this year. Yes you heard me... not in 2011. They are banking for a 2012 production release in europe which can mean many things. Many things like ft-86 in whatever form it may be.... not making it to usa till 2013 or worse yet we will get another equivalent of 6th gen ST watered down 97 horse power automatic standard 0-60 in under a century car.

Toyota is never in any kind of rush because it has nobody to compete with. All other sport or sporty car manufacturers have long progressed leaps and bounds. But dont get me wrong camry's are selling, and so are the tacomas and siennas and corollas so toyota is pretty content with showing up to various auto shows holding a banner "look what we can do". But so do other manufacturers especially those that have sporty cars actively in production year after year.

I want to see this one in another color to guage the overall lines. Supposedly, Toyota will announce the production version on April 22nd at the New York Auto Show - I can't wait.

i like it, just not so sure about the rear. maybe it'll grow on me....can't wait to see a more production ready car. im pretty sure everything will get toned down a bit.

i'm sure if toyota wanted this release, they would have released it by now. for now, we can assume that there is a small market for performance vehicles compared to larger passenger vehicles (camry, corolla, highlander, etc.) and smaller economy cars (echo, yaris, etc) which is probably why toyota has not released a performance car yet.

i don't think it has to do with competition, but instead it has more to do with revenue. the market for performance cars will always be much smaller than the market for economical passenger cars. so why would a car manufacturer build something that won't generate as much revenue? until the market for performance cars grows large enough for toyota to invest in these type of cars, then can we see toyota developing more performance oriented vehicles. don't get me wrong, it's not the fact that people don't want performance, instead people prioritize practicality and affordability. and those two factors do not often mix well with performance.

i happen to be one of those people who would prioritize on affordability before performance (i'm sure most of you are too, otherwise you'd own a supra instead of a 6gc biggrin.gif ) but i am eager for this release. i plan to get one someday if not on the launch date, unless something better comes out. i should have a solid engineering job by then so only time will tell.

realistically speaking I doubt that any of us drive supras. Outside of costing upwards of 40 grand for a good twin turbo in used condition.. the insurance is through the roof and most people could never afford to make payments on both. Heck I am trying to figure out what to do with my conundrum where it will cost me about $1000/mo to buy and drive an evo 10.

I figure you have to earn 80+ grand and have no bills in order to afford a sports car like supra. Between high octane gas, low mpg, high insurance, high car payments... it is just not practical in any other circumstance. Which brings me to the final point of the day.

Toyota pulled out of sport car market because they could not sell their cars too well. Not when they cost an arm and a leg.

Toyota needs a sporty car for under 25 grand. And a sport car for under 30 grand so its affordable to college graduates.
