what I get from that presentation is that this will be a hybrid. not sure if that's a good thing or not, but to have a nice plattaform will be nice so I really don't care what engine comes out of the factory with, if power isn't up to par, I'll but a used one and put the right engine in it, hopefully this is not needed and it comes with something powerfull or at least with potential so swap is not needed, that's the only way I'd justify buying one new.

I'm buying one. The mrs. gave the, "I've got to have that" approval. Dual exhaust with the boxer rumble coming out will be sex.

Better start saving now and buy it with cash. Most lenders do not allow you to modify cars while under contract. Warranty will be void too.

QUOTE (MSN @ Mar 10, 2010 - 12:54 AM) *
A passion for design and performance has been lacking at Toyota for quite some time. The company has been building solid, reliable and soft passenger cars that have provided what most of the public needs. Here, Toyota is showing a 2+2 sports coupe, the FT-86 II Concept, and it looks the part of a true performer. A rear-drive, front-engine sports car, the FT-86 is the result of an alliance with Subaru. Power will be provided by a Subaru boxer engine, likely a 2.0-liter turbocharged four, set as far back as far as possible to improve weight balance. A six-speed manual transmission will be offered.

MSN seems to think the EJ207 will be in it, meaning 304 hp.

I don't like this 300 HP talk. I myself am waiting to buy one and I'm fine with 200 horses. 300 horses will mean the car will be competing with cars like 370s. Which means? yeah you guessed it, higher price tag. But 28k+ is just out of the window.

But they already stated this car is not going to be competing with the 370s. Although i believe if the initial sales are successful they'll release a better version with more power etc. to quench the HP thirst some of us have.

EJ205 is also 2.0, and if it's got a TD04 on it, we're talking 225ish hp.

EJ207+VF39 might equal 300, but that's REALLY pushing it.

On the plus side, Cobb Tuning will probably build an Accessport ROM flash for the FT-86, which means more powah!

Lets not put the cart ahead of the horse boys. For starters difference between 25K loan and a 30K loan is not that significant. Furthermore difference between 200 and 300 hp is very significant especially for tuning crowd. Upping your 200hp car to a 300hp car will run you thousands of dollars and void the warranty. On the other hand a respectable 300hp out of the box car will just need minor external tweaks and you are set.

I guess to each is own but lets look at the facts. 2011 mitsubishi evo costs just under 35 grand and is a superior car to so called ft-86. 2011 subaru sti costs under 34 grand and is also superior to ft-86. There is no way in hell toyota can price their ft-86 around 30 grand because at that point one can spend a little more and get themselves a rally ready out of the box vehicle.

2010 scion is 162 hp and costs under 20 grand. 123
On average cars are priced about 110-120 per horse power. (for most consumer cars under 40 grand)
By that definition a 200hp car will cost just under 25 grand

Things to keep in mind.

#1 fuel prices are going up
#2 middle east instability
#3 middle class has cut back on spending with current economic situation

From FT-86 version 1 we have learned that it was going to be an omage vehicle designed for 30-40 somethings and up. In other words they had planned to price this vehicle accordingly right off the bat. They are also probably banking on quite a few people leasing these vehicles and leasing is a little cheaper. For example you can lease a 2011 wrx impreza for around 300 per month which is less than my current truck payment.

So as things stand this vehicle (unless they switch to a hybrid type engine) will likely costs 25-28 grand guaranteed.

Looks good to me. If they keep the interior from the concept then even better! it's always a matter of "to each his own" anyway
