Just took my car in to get emission. It failed. I asked the guy what could be wrong and he said he had no idea. I mean the car runs fine. I havent driven it for about two weeks and just barely started driving it again. It did shoot out some blue smoke when it was on the dyno. I think the cat is ok since the NOX rating looks fine.

15MPH
%CO2----15.0
%02------0.0
----------------
HC(PPM) MEASURED
102
-----------------
CO(%)
0.47
-----------------
NOX(PPM)
135

25MPH
%CO2----14.2
%02------0.0
----------------
HC(PPM) MEASURED
159 Fail Max Allowed 118
-----------------
CO(%)
1.64 Fail Max Allowed .54
-----------------
NOX(PPM)
709

If anyone knows what could be wrong or where to start that would be much appreciated. Thanks.

co readings are high which means ur running a little rich. Check if u have any exhaust leaks before the oxygen sensor. smog machine cant read blue smoke. all that is its burning oil.Check spark plugs and compression. nox did go up higher which means combustion did get hotter.so check leaks make sure ur oxgenn sensors are performing good and not being lazy

Would you think a basic tuneup would bring the numbers? I just barely bought the car and havent done any service to it. I think im starting there and changing the spark plugs, wires, cap and rotor, change the pcv valve air filter, oil, and maybe flush the cooling system. I might just get a new 02 sensor as well..(How many are on a celica?)

Would runing some kind of detergent on the engine help like seafoam?

do the tuneup and make sure to get the engine good and warmed up. drive down the highway in 4th gear (3rd in the automatic) for a couple miles at 60+mph to get the CAT nice and hot and working 100%. when you go for the testing try to go at a time where you won't be idling for a long period before the test, if you do need to idle for a while hold a fast idle at about 1500 RPM.

Ok well now i got a check engine light. Im hoping that its an oxygen sensor or two, that would explain running rich and not burning the gas. And hoping a new set of spark plugs and wires will also help the combustion, maybe thats what its lacking. Im gonna try the self-diagnosis tom and see what i get.
