I guess my love affair with these cars started upon my return to the States from Japan and just being in awe of the 6gC's style; there's something about how fluid and sleek this car is...the curvy back end combined with the sultry front end. Just gorgeous.
Since my freshman-year HS Civics project where we had to "budget" our lives once we made it to the "real world" and I chose a '99 Celica GT I've dreamed of owning one. 10 years, one Bachelor's degree, and one troublesome '97 Grand Am later I now own my dream car - a Red GT Hatchback. -------------------- Has no more Celicas

I was looking for a new car, because my 1998 Buick Century was about to hit the ****ter, and the Celica was just in the right place, at the right time, with the right price tag. Paid 2,700 for my 96 5 speed coupe, with 58,000 miles on it. Nothing wrong with the car except for the suspension being a little shot and a little tiny bit of body damage that I took care of.
I gotta say, that buying this car was hands down a steal. This post has been edited by Ruroniarc: Jun 8, 2009 - 9:11 PM |

I loved the shape of them. Everwhere around me has Scoobies and Evo's so I wanted something different when I decided to get a new car. It had to be a turbo. I had liked the Gen6 GT4 for years so I started looking for importing one as my fathers garage done that. But I picked this one up a few months later 1 day after selling my old car.
I ****ing love it. Plus the insurance for one is half the price as an evo or scooby and I have no idea why ! I am paying £95 per month, fully comp for the car. Had it over a year -------------------- |

what made me buy mine was the fact i was needin a car, i only had so much...was bout to buy suv and saw this celica there for sale, thought it was a supra at first, took a look at it saw it was not a supra......... noticed the price was within my range called the guy ask him if i could test it he handed me the keys says enjoy im gonna wash my car, so i took it for a spin and love the way it felt great shifting good power came back while he was drying his rims off took a look at the mechanics of it, liked it so then i handed him the cash he gave me the title....as i was driving it from where it was parked a cop slamed into me from bhind.....he got in trouble cuz he was lookin at his computer other the watchin the road gave me 1400$ so what i spent on the car i got it back.....got the car for free...lol....btw the reason he sold the car was cuz he bought a white 6gc hatch...he sold me the coupe....the guy i bought the car from witnessed the cop hittin me...lol i bet he wanted to cry seeing his car hit like that right after transaction

well the supra came out before the celica in 93 right? TECHNICALLY that statement is incorrect. 1st gen celi before 1st gen Supra. Should be the MKIV came out before the 6th gen celi. But I do love that both cars have similar body styles, it's a good look This post has been edited by 96bluevert: Jun 11, 2009 - 3:26 PM -------------------- |

Kinda funny actually how i wanted a 6th gen. Well back in the states, i kinda sorta made an impromptu decision to take my little honda prelude off-roading. Lol, long story, but anywho the experiance and fun i had at that moment, err after i had sat down and thought about what i had done, got me into wanting to start/take up rallying. And being the toyota guy i am, i figured there was no other car to do it in, than a Celica GT4. True, i was in america at the time, and finding a GT4 was downright next to impossible.
So a few threads on this site, gave me the idea that maybe i could attempt the drivetrain swap on an american 6th gen. Yes yes, it wouldve been difficult/expensive, but i was determined and very tenacious about it all... Good thing happened though, because i got orders overseas, eventually landing me back in okinawa. And with a chance to finally get what i wanted, i jumped!!! And i agree, i would NEVER swap my GT4 for a supra..dont care whats special about it And any mention of the idea would be pure blasphemy -------------------- (\__/)

You know i boast alot to some ppl that yea it can be done for the right price! There are ways, but no matter what, i plan on keeping it for a few more years, either in japan or by having a nice stay over in europe for a few years. What happens after that, well ill see when i get there

can't you simply import it after its 15 years old though? so you'd just need to stay there till 2010? Or if the military is going to pay the freight, then you could just garage it until its eligible to be registered.

Or if the military is going to pay the freight, then you could just garage it until its eligible to be registered. 1) The military is not going to pay the freight for his car. I'm all for supporting the military, but I'd be pissed if that's where my tax dollars went considering there are guys in Iraq who are still going around without adequate equipment. I can think of far better things to spend tax money on, and hopefully the US Govt can too. 2) You can't import it into the US anyway. That's Canada, not US. And I think there's some weird issue/change of heart going on about it in Canada, too... something about safety standards IIRC. -------------------- |

ah, I didn't know it was Canada that had the 15 year importing rule. oh well.
About the freight, I assumed that the military would ship all of his belongings home with him free of charge. I would assume that he has some furniture or something that he's going to bring back stateside if he comes. I just thought that they wouldn't charge him shipping and handling. Yes griffgurl you are right with the 15yr rule. American likes to wait 25 years for such rules to NOT apply. And as far as shipping it over through the military. Lol, my friend LilJoe on this site acn answer that question best. I think it goes, that their is a list the military has that says what cars they will/will not ship. A non-conforming list i think is what its called. And to ship a vehicle pretty much, you have to find your own importer, one that can bring the vehichle up to "stateside regs" and the the military will worry about shipping. Noe of course your vehicle will still have to be on that list saying that it non-conforms, and needs this and that to be legal in america. And yes the 6th gen is on that list. Not too sure if it covers the GT4 though. But that for vehicles coming from japan. And the rules are different in europe. Also i think i mightve gotten some of that info wrong
Oh and also, griffgurl yes there are two wars going on and having money sent to the troops over there is a very important thing. Lol, trust me im here now, and if we need something ill be glad to get it. But also, you have to keep in mind that the shipping of cars and vehicles at the militaries expense, is one of our benfits. Due to us PCS'ing all the time, and its meant to help take the load off of our backs when we move base to base. And yes its useful. Over the past 6 years ive only spent 1.5 years in the states, and i had to leave a car back in america that im still paying money on, just for the military. IM not looknig for sypathy, but hey, thats how it works out for us. And besides they (the goverment) set aside so so much money every fiscal year for things like that which shuold cover all branches...so ehh.... besides im sorry but i think ive gotten this thread alittle off subject...sorry mods -------------------- (\__/)
