only holding off on the pump because I am tapped for money. This $300+ on top of the $400+ for labor after having to install a new motor a week ago is killing my bank. How much should I expect it to cost to have a shop test the head?

no point in holding off on the water pump. you might as well do timing belt, water pump, thermostat, VC gasket ,HG and new head bolts all at once. also take the head to a machine shop have them pressure test the head for cracks and surface it. if the HG blew it will be warped agreed! multiple birds in one shot. saved up and it will be good in the long run. you dont wanna spend labor twice since your taking everything apart. -------------------- God made man....

I have till next Wednesday to think about it all. I'll have to decide and also see what I can afford. There is no "saving up" because I need my car on the road asap. Believe me, I would like to. As for the water pump I may or may not, he said it'll be like $30 later on to do it so it's not at all bad. May try to get away with just the head gasket, I really want to end up building my motor (hopefully in the near future) so at that time if my car is still running, I'll be doing all the gaskets, seals, etc anyway.

What will happen if you don't replace the valve cover gasket, since it is just rubber and won't break?

So i replaced the headgasket. The old one didn't have an noticeable tears or cracks where it blew. Car is up and running, my mechanic lets it idle and takes it for a test run before calling me. I get there start it up, it idles smooth, then starts pouring smoke out the tail agian.... what is wrong? Anyone have ideas.
thanks. |
