"L" plate is for "Learners" - can only drive with a fully licensed person in the front passenger seat. They have to complete a certain amount of hours (50 to 150) and be on their "L's" from 6 months to 2 years (depends on which state you live in with hours/months/years required).

"P" is for "Provisional" - can drive on your own, can't have any alcohol in your system, and other laws. Usually there are P1's and P2's - each with different laws/rules. My state only has red P plate's, whereas other states have green and red ones. Not sure about those, but in SA once you have been on your P's for 2 years you can sit the P2 test. When you're on your P2's in SA though you don't have any P-plates on your car - different in other states?

Correct me if I'm wrong on any of this haha.

^^haha classic

I have heard its quite hard or takes awhile to get them over in aussie, so congrates. Over here it's just too easy. Scratch and win you have your L, go for a quick drive you have your R, go for another drive while talking about hazards and you get your full. all in a space of I think its about 2.5 years? So you can get your at 15 and have your full drivers license at about 17.5 years old.

I just got my P's in July, learnt in an auto, then bought a manual celica. Stalling it for a week or so made me want to hit something haha.

How about getting a permit (needing an adult in the passenger seat, not being able to drive between 11-5 unless for work purposes) at 15 and a driver's license at 16? Yeah.

for L's you need a full license passenger (held license for over 2 years) next to you always, can carry passengers.

For restricted, you can drive by yourself between 6am-10pm (but if carrying passengers need that full license passenger) and no log books etc recording the type of driving you do (I think you aussies have to do that dont you?)
but there are some circumstances like work permits and family members

this is all I can think of at the moment.

Yeah log books, need to record all your hours in it kindasad.gif Where I'm from we don't have any curfews at all, on L's or P's, pretty lucky - also only state in Australia not to have any restrictions on high powered/turbo'd vehicles for L and P drivers haha. I think that's going to change soon though.
