alright i used the search and it came back with nothing so here it goes.
my passenger side started clicking from there im assuming thats what it is. ive got almost exactly 140k is the timeline correct? do i have to replace these in pairs? i have heard mixed reviews when i brake the popping (think of your knee popping really hard) stops and it goes away when i accelerate. it is the worst under 30 mph, i dont know if thats because its quieter and i can hear it more and/or if it is because the popping is farther apart and so its more pronounced. i have heard of buying "half axles" and also, how much time do i have? obviously im going to try to replace asap, but gotta get the money first. thanks for the help |

since you are in dallas, there are axle shops that will rebuild it for $40-$50 per side.

I have the same ordeal with my car, I was going to just replace the entire axel(new). Is this difficult to do alone?

hmm i remember there being a topic about replacing these. you said you searched and couldn't find anything. you can to what he said, get them rebuilt, which is just fine. or buy just aftermarket ones that cost about $90-$110 at the most. my left (drive side) was the first to go out. it sounded as if it was metal to metal hitting against each other. i thought it was my exhaust that was loose, becuase i just recenlty put it in. when i got my high flow cat put in. the guy spotted the whole cv boot had exploded opened and all the grease was on the inside of rim. 2 months after, passenger side went out. got them replaced for $130 for each side and had them installed by a mechanic i know. didn't seem to be that hard, cause he only charge me $20-30 for labor, but then again he works on cars all the time at his house.
oh wait just found it here ya go http://www.6gc.net/forums/index.php?showto...replacing+axles This post has been edited by BonzaiCelica: Mar 23, 2009 - 11:35 PM -------------------- Group buy to replicate Narrow E series transaxle parts

the passenger side is very easy to do. Its the driver side that needs a lil more pushing or pulling.

well considering they are halfshafts then the pushing and pulling is the same for both sides the distance from the tranny to driver hub and cv to passenger hub is the same

It's a fairly simple job & even easier to just replace the whole driveshaft & not over expensive, had 2 done on mine now.

what prices are we talking for labor and parts? and can anyone in the dfw or surrounding area recommend good mechanics? i hate the chains (kwik kar, jiffy lube, etc.)
and does it really matter as far as replacing both or just one side? edit* i went on yellowpages.com and got a list of places, can anyone in dfw recommend anyone in particular? This post has been edited by 97celiman: Mar 24, 2009 - 11:07 PM |

yeah what is one in dallas i know if you get a brand new one where i live and pay someoen to do it they said around 400 with labor might be a rough estimate but if i could get it rebuilt or whatever for less than 100 thatd be good

400!?!? What kinda nazi mechanic is that? This topic was pretty old but, doing this youself is easy enough(you will get frustrated probably, axels are never a smooth change).

this car is actually pretty easy. too bad pepboys ordered the wrong one for me, i will get to do it again when i either buy one from toyota or autozone, just depends on how much toyota wants for it. i will never do special order parts or get parts from pepboys again unless i'm in a huge pinch. it took them 3 times to order the axle, only because the first 2 times they lost the order. third time they got the wrong one, didn't fit the hub and was 1.25" too short. after that i just went back and got my money refunded. O'reilly's was cheaper than autozone for the axles for me, its Kragen out here, check them out..... Mine fit perfect on the first shot.

Need to get mine replaced also, both boots have been torn for over a year now. About time I get it done.
Not sure if I really want to tackle this myself since I can't afford the car to be down if there is an issue. Any recommendations from the North Dallas members as to where I can get this done for a reasonable price? Thanks in advance. Chris |
