I found a Celica with 110K miles on it in my area for only 2,000 dollars (Hatchback, 5-speed). However, it says that it needs a new motor. I have yet to call the guy. But I was wondering how much a new engine would cost and how hard it would be to install back into the Celica engine bay. Because I got to thinking, if it would be cheaper just to buy the car and swap in the engine. It would probably also give me more satisfaction knowing I had a part in getting it back on the road.

Any comments? Advice?

Why not just get a 3sgte?

You can most likley geta 5sfe from a jusk yard for $500 and spend another $200 or so before its done. A st185 clip can be had for $1800 or so and should have all the parts you need for the swap, you would prolly spend another $500 on parts and all.

Well, I know about the 3S-GTE. I've posted in numberous topics about it and am fairly knowledgable. Don't think I didn't think about it. wink.gif.

Anyhow, the reason I'd go with the 5S-FE is money. I don't have a job yet, so my limit for my car will be around 2-3K cos that's what I got saved up. I'm thinking of doing a 3S-GTE swap, but in order to do that, I need a job. And I need a car before I can get a job, because all the ones in my town are taken. Sorry if I didn't fully explain my reasoning. Thanks for your input, as well.

Also, my dad has a degree in mechanics so we could more than likely do the swap in less than a full weekend. That is, unless, there are problems with removing this specific engine and such that I am unaware of.

Thats cool.....There are many types of 5sfe engines. I would try to get one for your year or as close as possible.
