I have a 94 1.8 St Celi that seems to make a grinding noise when I shift into 2nd gear. It does not always make this noise happens every once in a while when I get into the 5-6,000 rpm range. It gets really annoying and i really want to fix it. I'm just not sure if it will cost alot.

Also the same grinding happens when I try to shift down to 2nd gear going 40 mph. Its not like it doesn't go in but if i force it then it will make that annoying sound like metal against metal noise.

This doesn't happend in any other gear but 2nd. For example when im on the freeway going 70 in 5th gear and i decide to go into 3rd it goes in smoothly with no problem. The same with 1st if i try to downshift into 1st gear going like at 25 it either wont go in or it does. But neither 3rd or 1st gear make any metal to metal sound, like a grinding noises.

I would really appreciate anybodys help THANK YOU!

Your synchro is worn in ur 2nd gear---2nd and 3rd gears are the most used gears so they will be the first of the 5 to start wearing out. Thats my 2 cents...

well you'll have to go to a transmission shop and have them take out your entire transmission to get to your synchros, and yes it has to do with your gearing obviously because its how your gears synchronizes into each other when you shift into them. Blagh i suck at explaining things, but if you can manage to remove your tranny yourself, and bring it to a tranny shop then it'll be cheap, because it really bases down to labor.
As for price..i dont know...go get some quotes. I'm sure the shops will give you a free inspection or something, but ask always to be safe.

I've noticed that when I heel toe when im shifting down from 3rd to second my gears don't always grind.

I also noticed that my 2nd gear synchros rarely grind when I'm driving in the rain, I wonder why that is? How is it that synchro's wear down. Is it because my car has 120,000 miles on it? Do newer cars experience the same wear and tear?

that happened to me before shifting fr 2nd to third on high rpms. i realized that i was so in a hurry to shift and it wasnt smooth.

try shifting smoothly. you could try changing ur tranny fluid with pennzoil syncromesh.

Umm, I'm not expert, but from you've described on OP, it seems your shifting is off..

I know my ST it goes 1st 0-25, 2nd 25-45, 3rd 45-60..so on so fourth. Why would you be trying to go into second when going 40 when its already going to fly up in RPMs when the 7afe already hates high RPM. Wouldn't it be wiser to goto 3rd, give it a little gas....

Speaking of which mine does the same thing, but on 3rd, i can't get into third going 55, but can downshift when its at 50...

and 5-6k rpm on the 7afe is asking to kill it from what i understand. 3k is our max torque.

i recently change my tranny fluid about 7,000 miles ago. Are you talking to me rave2n? what do you mean my shifting is off. and whats OP?

i can downshift all the way down to 1st when im going 35 mph. I believe 1st gear goes up to 37 mph, and it doesnt even grind at all, wheels seem to lock up a bit when i do so, but thats when im braking at the same time. its just so fun. Mainly has to do with watching videos on youtube from the gt channel, with tshuchiya racing various cars on the togue.

Yea, mine doesn't shift anything like yours does, but I also don't redline mine at all...it just seems to have no performance past a certain rpm range, which isn't redline.

OP - Original Post

All in all, your sychros are going. Same with mine...

Rave2n is right, the 7afe doesn't have any performance after 5k RPM. I dynoed mine (stock) and after 5k RPM your ECU just DUMPS fuel into your engine and kills the performance. It's never worth bringing it past that point, wastes gas and loses performance.

wow. you really shouldn't ever have to downshift into first gear, you are more likely to damage components than achieve anything. 1st gear should be used only to get the car rolling from a stop (and not to redline either.. ), 2nd can be used for anything besides that.

You should also learn to rev match in order to get smoother gear shifts.

Honestly it seems to me that you just need to fine tune your manual shifting techniques as the way you are doing it, you are prematurely wearing the synchros. No offense intended, just my observation....

hey I have the same problem in 1st and 2nd. when i push the gas to fast it sounds that metal on metal ugly sound.
I always be careful to now exceed 3k rpms. Sometimes it happens xD but never got to 7 tongue.gif

anyway so it could be the wron synchronizers???
What should transsmition fluid should I use?

uhh hence, as to why I mentioned that I heeled toe. Which is rev matching engine speed with the gearing speed! I know I shouldnt really be driving like that unless Im on a racetrack, but I love driving fast and crazy on the roads, it makes it so fun.

I'm using motul 75w-90 synthetic gear oil. cost me $10 a bottle. haha Im never selling my celica! Well I might sell my engine since I am doing an engine swap in the future biggrin.gif

if you watch best motoring videos/ gt channel videos that are posted up on youtube about how keiichi tsuchiya drives all different type of cars on the togue you will see the reason as to why I drive the way I do.
