I am attempting to remove the CV joints from the transaxle and they are not coming out. They are not the flanged CF joints, they are the splined inner ends and mymanual says they should just come out easily. Well they are not. I have pounded, yanked, tapped, tried everything, they are not coming out. Is there a snap ring or something that I'm missing? Help!

'94 with a 7A-FE and manual trans.

With all the work youre going to put into removing just the cv, it is alot easier to get the whole assy. And I think there is a snap ring on there.

maybe merry and pippin can help you?

you need to give it a whack with a dead blow dead on to pop it off and there probably is a snapring. but everyone is right, you're probably better off getting the whole axle unless you've got low miles and just are replacing a leaking boot.

The axle is stuck in the transmission... I can't get it out. The splined ends that go in to the differential will not pull out. I am not taking it apart I'm trying to remove it.

You have to push it in and pull it out, also try getting a big screw driver or pry bar to pull it out.

i just rebuilt a 7A-FE and let me tell you those axles are a real bitch to get out. using a prybar, you need to wedge on the axle and rotate the axle at the same time. ther eis a sweet spot where the snap ring will collapse easier. i ended up pulling the engine out with the axles attached. it was not easy!

with propper skills it takes less than a minute.


get a big prybar, and a mallet.

put it between the axle and tranny, you may damage the dust ring, then push the axle upward and SMAK.

IT TAKES A BIG BLOW.

I changed my axles several years ago and had this same problem. The driver's side axle popped right out, but the passenger side took me, 2 other guys, a rope, and a very loud grunt. Nearly pulled the car off the jack stands. woot.gif

Thanks for the help.
I got my hands on an air chisel, going to give that a shot and see what happens. I got a good feeling it will work.

So are there C-clips in that thing? or am I just dealing with a 16 year old car that has never had the CV's removed...?

there is one c clip on each inner shaft. You just need to "pop" or pry each axle out with an ST, it's relatively easy.

crow bar and mallet.

Your essentially hitting the crow bar with a mallet to pop the axle out of the transmission. Took me 10 minutes of trying to gently get it out. But finally i said f* it and beat on the pry bar to finally get it out.

Just finished my passenger axle bout 20 mins ago, popped right out. There is some groves right around the joint housing, using a sharp pry bar and mallet, took 2 good whacks, and slid right out. Getting it back in was slightly more difficult, but only slightly. Checked for wheel wooble, torgued bolt to spec, and test drove. Perfect. Time to do, roughly 2 hours, matters on how much grief the bolts give you. I had to stand on my rachet and pry bar to loosen up the axle bolt.
