Hey guys I recently noticed a chriping/squeeking noise coming from the pass side under the hood. This only happens when above 1k rpms and this fluctuates while accelerating. When listening under the hood it sounds like the alternator whining a bit. Is there anything else that could make this noise? Just trying to troubleshoot and save up money before i take it to the shop... thanks guys

tighten the belt a little, if the sound goes away you need a belt. if it does not then you need to locate the source of the noise.

I had that exact same problem. Most strange noises my car made were only heard while i was in the car. Lemme know how that works out for you.

will do... I'm hoping its just the belt but i have had the alternator for 125k (original) with a sound system for about 5 years so it has had its strain... thanks for the input guys, I'm prob taking it to the shop to see soon. Noise can mainly just be heard inside the car and its kind of annoying to me.

had the same issue, the alternator actualy begins to fail when its under too much stress. does the sound disapear when u get above a certain rpm range? mine would whine below 2200 rpm.

Could be belt, pully, altenator, or PS pump. The trick i've used, get a pole, and put your ear on one end, then point the other end at noise and move around til you find where its coming from. Obviouslly where its louder is the location. Try not to hit the belts either with the pole...that could hurt. Then you know exactly where the squeek is coming from. This is how I fould out my PS pump resevoir was leaking and causing the pump to work harder if at all, and causing the squeek.

Sounds like the belt. With the car off, push on the belt between pulleys. Should have about 1/4" of movement. Tighten if has more slack than that, or replace if frayed/cracked. -------------------- 1999 Celica GT

sounds like the belt, tighten a lil first and test, use belt dressing might correct it or at least lubricate the belt, if your belt is damaged cracked etc, just replace.

i've heard never to apply belt dressing just because it only makes it worse.
btw i've had the same problem. i've decided it's my alternator bearings (that nobody has tried to meniton before) because it's making a nice metallic whine noise around or a little above idle. i notice mine on shifts (when rpms drop) but when i get to cruising speed (60mph) i don't notice it because of road/wind noise. i have 231k miles on mine with the orginal engine and clutch, the alternator has been replaced before. but it may need to get another one. what would be a good aftermarket higher amp alternator? send me a message if you don't want to post here. thanks! |

it doesn't make it worse to me it only stalls the problem for a while. But honestly, they dont sell it for nothing. But again, this is really kindergarten problem that anyone can solve by feeling the belt, looking at it, adjusting it, or replacing it.
