So my car started making these strange noises espeially when cold, I noticed the noise comes from the timing belt side of the engine. It sounds like a knocking or slapping sound and I can hear it alot more the closer I get to the timing belt cover. Any Ideas as too wat it could be?

Maybe this will help if anyone can recognize the noise, The sound quality isn't great and I didn't have a flash light but its right above the timing belt cover

Wow that sounds bad! My 5sfe makes some sounds like that in the same area and its due to needing a new timing belt kit. Mine doesnt sound near as bad as yours though. Take the cover off like bitter said. I would get the problem fixed asap if i were u.

I would get the timing belt changed close to now, sounds like it could be frayed, that sound is similar to the sound my serpentine belt made when it started fraying.

I have similar problem...there is a plastic cover inside the cover for the timing bell - so this cover have been loose and needet to be fix correctly- so just remove the cover for the timing belt and you will see - and you can check the time belt condition
good luck

cheers

I hope you got your tensioner, idler bearing and water pump changed at the same time
as this is a must for this car.
it will cost you alot more if any of these fail
