Need to make the final decision soon cause I have prices on all three types of engines and winter is almost here. I have to choose but since I already decided to go with the 4a series engine I'm having trouble choosing which one. They all have aspects that I like. Just need alittle nudge in one direction. Post why you would choose it and hopefully some one will strike a nerve and help. I know all the horse power/torque stats just need the humanistic reasons. Like, more low end torque or better top end or just a well rounded engine. Got a couple weeks to make a final choice. Piggy banks open, ready for those two cents...

simply cause you'll have the option of adding a turbo and SC later on..

Why not get a supercharger stock and upgrade? 4agze you'll find cheaper parts and the motor is already built up for boost.

in order to add FI to the 20v silver or blacktop, you must rebuild the internals because of the super high compression. the blacktop would be a wonderful motor, but parts in the US are non-existant. with that motor, however, you could get the later model, and have the luxury of having a 6-speed tranny in a 6th gen celica...the GZE is pretty self explainitory, 160-170hp stock depending on what version/year motor you get, +30hp with just a Cusco crank pulley upgrade, easy to convert to turbo, etc etc (if you go with this swap, just lemme know, and i can help you out with the specifics as much as you need it). then there's the silvertop. honestly, i don't think that's a very good option for a swap. too much effort for nto a whole lot of power. if driven right, and using the right fuel, you MAY be able to get near the 150hp mark they are rated at, but also know they are rated way over what they actually produce. again, with the blacktop, you will have to do some sourcing of parts, and also like the blacktop, in order to get a lot of increase in power, you have to work from the inside of the motor out.

final opinion: 4AGZE or 4AGE blacktop.

I say avoid the 4agze because I would prefer to pop on a turbo later. A SC puts so much strain on the engine its hard to say how much trouble you may have with a 4agze. Also the difference between the 4agze and 4age last time I looked is around 700? *this is fuzzy I forget* for that price you would be nicly on your way to a nice turbo! Last issue I can think of is, fear the insurance if you get the 4agze frown.gif Good luck man hard choice.

I voted for the black top, but that's not what I would personally do.

A while back I posted about getting an old MR-2's 4agze (89 model).

For about 3k, you would have a turbocharged, re-built 4agze with propper pistons and HKS head internal parts. We figured you could boost it to about 20 PSI and be good to go.

If you start cheap, you can get expensive parts to make it better. But if you start expensive,,,

superchargers are much more reliable than turbochargers, so i don't know where you get that they are more strenuous? also, if you would rather turbo, it would be MUCH more advantagous to get the 4AGZE, as it is the perfect Turbo platform, seeing as how you merely drop the blower, and add the turbo..no internal work is needed to obtain turbo boost, where with the NA 4AGE's, you must rebuild the internals...

I read on one of the 4AGE sites that it can be boosted to 10 psi w/o any engine build up. With that it should still last and not blow. You can build it up and handle at least 20 psi. Even w/ the 4AGZE if you want to turbo ur gonna have to build up the engine. Like it was said before a turbo is much harder on an engine than a supercharger.

First off, any engine could theoretically handle 10PSI stock. For all of about 10-15 minutes, maybe. biggrin.gif . Ok, maybe not that quick, but, I doubt the 4A-GE is anywhere remotely the strength of the 4A-GZE. And also, for turbo on the 4A-GZE, you won't have to rebuild unless you want to boost a ton.

I vote for 4A-GZE. The fact for this is that it is boosted already, there are a good number of parts, and there are others (John) that have already been through most of this swap.

I voted 4agze...

But i'd be cautious... it hasnt been completed yet.... So be very choosy... maybe by the time u decide to swap either john or me, or someone else will be done.... It can be done... mechanically anyway. Wiring shouldnt be too bad... Just waiting for Mike to come through for me.... he's got quite a mess to deal w/

i have seen a 4agze in a late 80's early 90's tercel

the swap is very possible and no different than any other swap.

isn't their more aftermarket stuff for the 4age 16v? I was looking at TOMs stuff, plus individual throttle bodies.

Ya, John I'm definitly leaning on the z. I was going to Pm you when I bought it to get the down low on some sourcing. Have you looked at the Nevo UD pulleys? Still got a week to make up my mind. Keep posting though cause nothings set in stone yet.

I am having a very, very tough time with my swap, but I think that that's more due to my mechanic being so busy and lazy than anything else. I think the 20V silver top 4A-GE is going to be the easiest engine to swap in your case, and it's the only one that's been proven and has been done before.

If you plan on doing autocross or anything like that, I'd definitely say get either twenty valve 4A-GE, because it's a strong, high-revving engine that is excellent for autocross and road course racing. Installation of the twenty valve 4A-GE is going to be much easier as well, and from what I've read, a healthy AE111 or AE101 4A-GE can withstand 7 pounds of boost without any problems. wink.gif

If you plan on drag racing your car a lot, you'd probably be better off with the 4A-GZE, as it is a strong engine that has much better torque and is going to be faster than a twenty valve 4A-GE in the quarter mile. That said, I've never seen a sixth generation Celica with a running 4A-GZE, and the installation is much harder from what I hear.
