ok today i was working on my GT-4 bumper and the car happened to be on. and i noticed that the engine was making this ticking sound. so i tried to listen to where it was and it sounded like it was coming from the fuel injectors. is this normal?.. or do i need to look into it further?

engine ticking is usually the valve springs need adjustment

Could be lifter tick which is a common problem on these 5sfe or could be your valve clearance just needs to be adjusted back to spec.

fuel injectors should tick and ticked loudly on my 7afe, but there was also valve noise the 7afe does NOT have lash adjusters. it uses solid lifters which get shimmed. shims and clearances are probably fine and some noise is totally normally.

Haha...I though you had a GT cause I misread the GT-4 bumper my post was meant for a 5sfe DOHC and not the 7afe SOHC which is true only the 5sfe DOHC should be adjusted my fuel injectors don't tick nor does my brothers 7afe rolla which I know I helped him fix his fuel issues. smile.gif

ohh.. i thought 7Afe was a Dual overhead too.

"The largest production A-series engine was the 1.8 L (1762 cc) 7A-FE. Produced from 1993 to 1998, it was a 4-valve DOHC narrow-valve-angle economy engine stroked out from the 4A, also using the 4A-FE's slave-cam concept. Cylinder bore was 81 mm (3.19 in) and stroke was 85.5 mm (3.37 in)." <-- was what i read long time ago when i was researching about 7A's. i also thought 7A was Single from the start.. or is wiki just spouting lies? kindasad.gif

its dual, just a very narrow setup with a single cam driven by the belt and the other driven off a gear from the first cam...called a slave cam setup.

they do and they should, if they don't tick then they're probably dirty. clean injectors tick everytime they open/close, put your finger on it and you should feel it, put your ear near and you should hear it.

I'm not doubting you bitter but my brothers injectors were cleaned by witch hunter and when I removed them they didn't tick and when we got them cleaned and installed they didn't tick either I was listening for fuel pressure and I'm sure that I didn't hear any ticking when I was listening for fuel pressure around the rail.

they tick, put a screw driver to your ear hard and then the tip to the injector. some are quieter than others. the geo i have may have different injectors than the celica?

ok im guessing it's normal then?.. it sounds like what bitter is talking about. like it's not the kind of tick that's savage and loud. can't hear it when you're inside the car and my engine is pretty quiet too

one way to tell if its injectors is to put the engine into DFCO (deceleration fuel cut off). rev the engine up by hand and let the throttle snap shut, as engine revs down fuel injectors are off, injector ticking will cease. valve train will make noise no matter what.
