got to remember guys that when these original Estimated gas mileage were put out they would NEVER reflect what could be had in the real world. it was a number given under optimal driving conditions in every way and more like ricer math than a representation of what mileage you could expect from the car.. .. that's why the revisions were made a few years back to what manufactures post as city/highway mileage. current estimated gas mileage include regular start stop driving habits of city driving, the need to pass at highway speeds and not just stay at a constant optimal speed, the use of the A/C system is also included in the newer mileage estimates. and if i am not mistaken i believe that newer mileage estimates are based on an average highway speed of 80mph, and not the old US federally mandated standard 55MPH.. all of this makes a difference. today's standards are much more demanding of the manufactures but also represent an attainable MPG.

it has been almost 20 years since the first 6g-celica has rolled off the line, and technology has come a long way and advanced, all the wile the cost to implement it on a platform has gone down..
if the car were to be made w/ today's technology applied to it, with today's MPG rating standards being the measuring stick, i am confident in saying that the ST would be a 35-40 highway car and the GT a 30-35 highway car.

wile accounting for the fact that the car would most likely be about 200 lbs heavier from all the new safety equipment, most of that added weight would have been shed as there is more use of aluminum in cars today. (so really about the same weight). the motor it self would be a completely different daemon. wile staying in line with the original design goals and nature of the 7aFE, today's incarnation of the 7aFE would most likely be like a baby 2AZ-FE.. incorporating twin cam variable valve timing, a slight increase in compression ratio, longer power band (and the gearing to go with it). if it were made TODAY it would also most likely have direct injection.. all of this would give you a car that has 180hp (or close to it and only if it had direct injection, this estimate is based on what toyta's new DI motors are getting for volume to power ratings.)and a real world 35-40MPG highway... oh and the car would be in the same price point segment as it was when the 6gc was first on the lot..

yes sure all of that last paragraph is just talk and conjecture, but it is just to prove a point that the old MPG ratings were complete crap, and that even now, with the newer more stringent standards on MPG and engine power ratings, if the 6G celica were made today, the original 35-40 highway MPG goals WOULD be attainable..

They would do what they did back in the day. The ST would get the Corolla engine and the GT would get the Camry engine. So, the Celica would get what they get more or less. Maybe a little less due to sportier gearing for the Celica. I wish they'd come back out with the Celica. I'd make it my next car in a heartbeat. Hopefully with Toyota getting back to how things were, we'll see a new Celica soon.

3sge beams in a 1999 celica gt got a combined 28mpg on city and highway.
Im using 91 octane here in California and kept my rpms at under 3500 rpm. all at under 1,000 feet above sea level


Fyi i tried looking for most recent post about mpg but cudnt find it

What should be my speed on the highway for maximum fuel economy? There is a graph above showing 60 mph, do you guys agree?

55-60 generally is the most efficient highway speed. I can't help but feel at times our cars need a 6th gear though.

I squeezed out 500 miles from a full tank driving at 62mph drafting behind trucks. This is a straight drive, no stops at all.

I remember seeing that on Mythbusters. If you're feeling particularly cheap and adventurous if you draft within a few feet you'll get great gas mileage. tongue.gif

I did 35 mpg yesterday. 55 to 65 mph travel speed. At 70 I get about 31. Most of the time I'm about 32.5 mpg.
94 5s auto.

My 3SFE always gets good economy!
I always get 350 - 370kms to half a tank (217miles - 230 miles)
Best i've done was 425kms on 32 Litres (264 miles to 8.4 gallons)

I travel between two cities here in NC very frequently (about once a month). At no more than 3k RPM and traveling no faster than 70 mph I managed to get 45.5 MPG at my best - while 42 has been my average. People say blasting the heat and drafting off semi trucks doesn't net an MPG increase, but that was when I achieved 45.5 MPG. The trip is 166 miles in total, so the calculations are averaged out enough. Of course this trip is all highway. I'm always engaged in project maximum MPG!

5 tanks into ownership, getting between 520-580km per tank depending on how i drive and how
how long i drive with the gas light on. i'm confident I can break 600km and maybe even reach 700.
Just haven't made a long-distance trip yet.
Average is 27mpg.
Much better than my old Maxima at 19mpg.
Missing that v6 power though...

I agreee totally. What rpms are you guys on 60 mph & 70 mph
